Master Post: Top Secret (QL/XF/L&C, MSR, Lois/Clark)

Top Secret

Oh, wow, where to begin. This was probably the first long work of fanfic that I ever completed, and one of the most ambitious crossovers I ever wrote. That said, is it good? For me at the time I wrote it, yeah, it was pretty good. Whether it holds up against my more recent work is probably more debatable but I keep it around for nostalgia’s sake if nothing else. It came from a number of different places, such as: what happened to all of the random evidence of PQL’s existence that Sam and Al kept accidentally leaving in the past? What if someone found it? Where did the Evil Project come from? (I owe the answer given in this story to my college friend, Ed, who first thought of it.) What would happen if someone other than Sam stepped into the Accelerator? Would they wind up stuck too, or would God/Fate/Time/Whoever only have one task for that individual? I don’t know how good of a job I did answering those questions, but I had fun with it.

Also, I asked for and got permission from Michele Martin to make this a sequel to her story, The Witness, because it gave me a convenient shortcut to explain how Mulder and Scully knew certain things. I don’t think you have to read that story first to understand this one, but I’d recommend it anyway, because to this day I think it’s one of the best and most meta multi-fandom crossovers I’ve ever read. Even if (like me at the time) you don’t know all the fandoms. Oh, and lastly, this story is more or less directly responsible for me starting to watch The X-Files. I’d seen a few episodes before, which is what gave me the idea for the story, but I started watching regularly so I could write the characters better and wound up so obsessed that they, um, sort of took over the story.

Last, a bit of a disclaimer. I was in my late teens/early twenties when I wrote this, so the romance element is sappy in the extreme. But I think in spite of that, and all the other caveats I mentioned above, that it turned out to be a not-half-bad adventure. Hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane.

Fic: Modern Inconveniences (DCU/DW, gen)

Acknowledgments: Thanks to Mara for the beta.

For most people there were probably more advantages than disadvantages to the growing popularity of cell phones. Even Clark Kent–who was hardly “most people,” despite appearances–could appreciate those advantages most of the time. Still, there were times when he needed a phone booth in a hurry and they were getting harder and harder to find, even considering how much territory he could cover in a hurry.

Clark finally spotted one on the corner of Main and Market. It was a strange one–large, blue and old-fashioned with the words “Police Box” over the door for some reason–but beggars couldn’t be choosers. He glanced quickly in both directions, then hurried across the street and tugged on the door.

It was locked.

Clark frowned. Normally, he made it a policy not to destroy public property if at all possible–it was bad for Superman’s image if nothing else–but this was an emergency, and emergencies meant exceptions.

He tugged harder, applying just the slightest bit of super strength. The lock snapped, the door opened, and Clark ducked inside.

He stopped. He stared.

“Hey now–what do you think you’re doing?” demanded a scrawny man with tousled brown hair, wide, wild brown eyes and an English accent. He stomped across the improbably large interior to study the door, then turned back to glare at his intruder. “You broke the lock! That lock has withstood whole fleets of Daleks, and you think you’ve the right to just snap it in half whenever you fancy? Where am I supposed to find a locksmith to repair a used TARDIS, may I ask? Considering I’ve got the last one in the known universe!”

Clark stammered and took a step backwards towards the door. “I–I’m sorry, I…I was just looking for a p-phone booth–“

“Yes, well this one happens to be mine, and I’ll thank you to leave it,” the man fumed.

Clark left. There had to be easier ways to change into his costume without having to deal with a pin-striped lunatic lurking in some sort of dimensional pocket disguised as a phone booth. Maybe there was a vacant elevator somewhere nearby…

The Doctor watched him go with an expression of disgust, then turned back to the TARDIS’s center console, muttering under his breath:

“Bloody Kryptonians.”

Fic: World’s Tallest Leprechaun (Castle, gen)

Author’s Note: Written as a birthday/St. Patrick’s Day present for DebC.

“Are you sure about this?” Martha asked. She threw a dubious glance in the direction of the enormous black plastic cauldron he’d bought for trick-or-treaters this past Halloween. It currently held what had to be the world’s record for the most chocolate gold coins ever assembled in one place that wasn’t a factory.

Richard gave her a wounded look. Which, considering he was dressed as a leprechaun complete with fake red wig and facial hair, was fairly comical. “It’s Alexis’ first St. Patrick’s Day away from home,” he protested. “I wanted to make it special.”

“She’s in kindergarten, Richard, not Leavenworth.”

“And she’s my daughter, Mother, not yours.”

Martha smiled wryly. “Well, I suppose if the teacher can survive what you got up to for Valentine’s Day, she can survive this.”

“I’ll have you know, I think I made a damned cute Cupid,” Ricky defended himself.

“What you were is damned lucky none of the other kids’ parents had you arrested for indecent exposure,” she shot back dryly. The sight of her grown son in wings and a diaper had nearly given Martha a heart attack. But then, none of Alexis’ classmates’ parents had ever changed his diapers as a baby, so maybe that was her cross alone to bear.

“Yup. Very lucky. Which is why,” he argued, leaning in to give her a kiss on the cheek. “I make the perfect leprechaun.”

Richard picked up the cauldron. Thanks to being stuffed with chocolate coins rather than real gold, it wasn’t heavy, but it did look rather awkward to carry. “How do I look?” he asked.

Martha finally gave up fighting a smile. He was right about one thing: Alexis would be delighted. And, well, considering some of the creative and dramatic ways she’d found to embarrass him as a boy, it was only fair to pass the tradition on to the next generation while Alexis was still young enough not to mind.

All she said, though, was, “Your beard is crooked.”

Fic: Life After Death (Castle, Lanie/OC)

Author’s Note: I think I wrote this for fandom_stocking a year or two ago, but I can’t remember anymore for whom.

Lanie has a life. This sometimes comes as a surprise to people when they meet her. Particularly people whose only prior exposure to MEs are the ones on television who think a social life means chatting with the corpses.

Nuh uh. Lanie may work with the dead, but that doesn’t mean she’s dead. The blood in her veins is still flowing, thank you, and when she wants to she knows exactly how to get it pumping.

Sometimes all that requires is a tub of Rocky Road and a chick flick on TV or a good book. Tonight, it involves the hot guy with the British accent from the fifth floor and the classy little swing club she discovered last week. She’s wearing a slinky cobalt blue silk dress that hugs every curve and a pair of heels that ought to be registered as deadly weapons (which she knows from experience). When she opens the door and her date catches his breath, Lanie knows it’s going to be a good night.

She may know just about every way a person can die in New York City, but that’s not going to stop her from living.

Fic: Detective Heat, I Presume? (Castle/NCIS, gen)

Author’s note: I’m pretty sure I wrote this sometime during the first season of Castle, but I forgot about it until recently. Guess I couldn’t resist the parallels. Also, bonus points to anyone who spots the small cameo by a very different type of detective show.

“You look like a woman enjoying a well-deserved vacation.”

Kate Beckett looked up from her drink and glanced at the man who’d spoken to her. She studied him surreptitiously with a detective’s eye: tall, broad-shouldered and handsome with mischievous green eyes and the sort of smile that oozed charm and knew it. He was also, she noted with some amusement, giving her pretty much the exact same analytical once-over as she’d just given him.

Even though it was transparently an attempt at a pick-up, the easy kinship of law enforcement coupled with the fact that he was right, she was on vacation, made her smile. “That obvious, huh?”

He grinned. “Probably not for everyone, but to the trained investigative eye…” The eye in question twinkled. “Special Agent Tony DiNozzo, NCIS.”

“Detective Kate Beckett, NYPD.” She shook the offered hand.

“New York. Never did make it there,” was the somewhat cryptic answer, almost immediately clarified when he added, “Cycled through a few departments over the years. Baltimore. Philly. Peoria. Never lasted more than two years.”

Kate nodded absently. She knew the type. Hell, a friend of a friend in Toronto had gone through three captains in three years. “How long have you been with NCIS?”

Agent DiNozzo frowned. “Let’s see…wow. Just about eight years.” He grinned. “I think I’ve officially set a new personal record.”

Now that was a bit more unusual, at least in her experience. Either one had staying power or one didn’t. Men she’d known–LEOs and otherwise–didn’t start out with the attention span of a gnat and somehow turn into the most loyal of spaniels. Intrigued, she decided to probe a little. “Something just finally clicked, huh?”

DiNozzo shrugged. “You know how it is. Sometimes the chemistry is just…there.” He grinned again.

Beckett just rolled her eyes but the smile never left her face. In spite of herself, she found him amusing. And anyway, she was on vacation. Agent DiNozzo took that as an invitation and stood up from his own stool, shifting one nearer. “So, Detective, what brings you to our nation’s fair capital? Somebody take too big a bite out of the Big Apple?”

“Something like that,” she admitted, amusement slipping away into sober recollection. The last case they’d been on had been pretty horrendous, but then a murdered child was never a picnic. That it had been a little girl with red hair had only aggravated matters: the last she’d seen of Castle, he’d muttered something about going home to hug Alexis for a week and promptly disappeared. If Kate hadn’t already been planning this vacation before the case had landed in their laps, she probably would’ve marched straight into Montgomery’s office and demanded it anyway.

DiNozzo’s expression softened in sympathy. “What happened?” he asked quietly.

She was only half surprised to find herself pouring out the whole story. He was, after all, a fellow LEO. Contrary to what was usually portrayed on TV, that bond often transcended any petty interdepartmental rivalries, at least below the bureaucratic level. The agents and officers that still worked the streets generally knew better than to turn up their noses at anything that would help close a case. What did surprise her was she found herself including Castle’s reaction: apparently it had affected her more than she knew.

“Castle’s your partner?” DiNozzo asked, for clarification.

Kate’s expression lingered somewhere between a grimace and a grin. “Sort of. It’s Richard Castle, the mystery writer. He’s been tagging along as a ride-along for about the past year thanks to having the mayor on speed dial. ‘Research’ he calls it.”

DiNozzo made a face of his own, which Kate initially interpreted as sympathy for her for having to put up with a civilian underfoot on investigations.

“Annoying, isn’t it?” he asked. She was about to agree when he knocked her for a loop with his next words. “We’ve got a probie on the team who made a mint slapping together thinly-veiled accounts of some of our cases and changing the names to protect the guilty. Never was a big mystery reader–figure I get enough of those in real life–” He smirked “–but now I wish I’d thought of it first.”

Wait a second…she’d read a series of mystery novels about an NCIS team. They weren’t exactly Pulitzer material, but then neither were Castle’s. “What’s his name?”

“Who?”

“Your probie.”

“Tim McGee, although he writes under a pen name. Gemstone or something.” A look of horror crossed his face. “Oh, God, don’t tell me you’ve read them.”

Thom E. Gemcity. Deep Six. Oh, didn’t that just figure. “I think I have,” Kate admitted. “If the novels are thinly-veiled versions of your cases, does that mean the characters are thinly-veiled versions of your team?”

“More like thinly-veiled caricatures in most cases,” DiNozzo agreed with a half-hearted, half-affectionate scowl. “Wait…” He looked at her as if a light had suddenly gone on. “Castle…I think I remember McGeek raving about one of his books the other day. Made some crack about it being right up my alley if I knew how to read.” Another smirk and then, “Detective Nikki Heat, I presume?”

Beckett sighed. “Special Agent Tommy DeNofio?”

He chuckled wryly. “The one and only. Apparently.” He downed the rest of his scotch, glanced at his empty glass, then at hers. “I say this calls for another drink.”

Beckett shoved her own glass across the bar towards the bartender. “Make mine a double.”

Fic: Reluctant Heirs (BoP, gen)

“Well, if it isn’t Mr. Can’t-Trust-You-If-You-Won’t-Tell-Me-Your-Name.”

Reese turned. He’d known Helena was standing there before she spoke, but the more-snide-than-usual tone in her voice was unexpected. “You got a problem with me?”

She pushed away from the wall she’d been leaning against and approached him, her eyes glittering cold and angry like black diamonds. “I have a problem with hypocrisy, yeah.”

He shook his head. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Don’t you, Detective Hawke?”

Reese stiffened.

“All this time, all that crap about not being able to trust me if I couldn’t trust you with my real name…” Her voice was bitter. “Look who’s talking.”

“It’s not the same.” The words slithered out, not one of them making his jaw move.

“How? Because you’re ashamed of who you really are and I’m not?”

He recoiled. The words felt like a kick to the stomach, and from the look of triumph in her eyes, she knew it.

“Or because there’s a record at City Hall that says you had your name legally changed to Reese, your mother’s maiden name? Bullshit. It’s still a name you chose for yourself, just like Huntress is for me. But that wasn’t good enough for you. No, you had to constantly pressure me to find out the name I was born with when you didn’t even have the balls to tell me your own.”

For a moment, a sullen, stubborn silence hung between them.

“So, is he?”

“Is who what?”

“Is Hawke your father?”

The detective closed his eyes, biting down hard on his lip. She was right–he was ashamed of it. “Yes.”

Her voice was quieter now, almost regretful. “No wonder we butt heads so much. Barbara tried to tell me you and I were just too much alike, but I didn’t believe it.”

Eyes snapped back open and he blinked once in confusion. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about how the two of us could practically start the Adult Children of New Gotham Criminal Masterminds support group, that’s what I’m talking about.”

“What??”

The Huntress continued to watch him, but the obsidian-cold gleam of rage in her eyes had softened. Wow–there really was a first time for everything. She sighed. “Catwoman. Ever heard of her?”

Reese shook his head.

“They called her the queen of the New Gotham criminal underworld. I called her Mom.”

“Damn.”

The woman across from him took a deep, ragged breath, as if by doing so she could suck the tears right out of her eyes without letting them fall. “Funny thing is, she gave it all up for me. I never even knew who she’d been until after she died in my arms.”

He flinched. No wonder she’d held on so tightly to the girl watching a building burn down with her mother in it. “Then you’re the lucky one.”

“Maybe,” she admitted. “But I still know what it’s like to feel like you have to atone for everything they’ve done. Why do you think I started doing what I do? It’s wasn’t for the pay or the great benefits, that’s for sure. I’ll tell you something though…”

Instinctively defensive, the detective crossed his arms and stared at her defiantly. “What?”

“In the end, no one’s responsible for what they did with their lives but them. You can spend your whole life trying to make up for it but never succeed. Sooner or later, you have to find your own reasons for keeping up the fight, or you’ll kill yourself trying to undo the past.”

He didn’t budge. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

She snorted. “No, you won’t. You’ll have to learn it the hard way, like I did. If you’re lucky, the lesson won’t be fatal.”

Reese sighed, dropping his eyes for a moment to search for a retort. “Look–“

When he looked up again, she was gone.

Fic: Four of Diamonds (BoP, gen)

Author’s Note: Thanks to Debbie and Medie, for their constant encouragement, and LaCasta for the beta. I think, but am not 100% sure, that the diamond I used in the graphic is in fact the Canary Diamond. It seemed appropriate. *g*

She is a diamond in their dull grey lives
And that’s the hardest kind of stone
It usually survives…
–“She is a Diamond,” Evita

I. Helena

I never wanted this for Dinah. Yeah, I was jealous that suddenly here was her mom, alive and well and wanting to be a part of her life again. I resented the hell out of the fact that she judged me and my worthiness to be a part of her daughter’s life based on the actions of my mother…my mother that I adored and who never left me by choice. What right did she have to say I was a bad influence on Dinah when she’d abandoned her of her own free will?

But that doesn’t mean I wanted her dead. And it sure doesn’t mean I wanted her daughter to have to watch her die, like I did with my mom.

We didn’t need to have that in common.

I like Dinah. I don’t like to admit it all the time, and it took me a while for her to grow on me, but I genuinely do like the kid. She’s strong, confident, stubborn…a lot like me, only softer. Or at least she was. Now, I don’t know. My mother’s murder hardened me. It brought out a side of me that Barbara doesn’t like to acknowledge exists, but it does. A side of me that doesn’t always want to be a hero, that doesn’t always want to do the right thing. A side I fight with every day of my life, like I told Guy.

I’d give anything to take back that night, to become again the girl I was before it happened. I would’ve given anything to stop history from repeating itself with this kid who’s starting to become like a sister to me.

Barbara tries to say, sometimes, that it’s a good thing I’m hard. Of course, this is the same Barbara who lives most of the time in denial of that hardness. The same Barbara who feels the need to constantly remind me that we’re the good guys, we don’t kill people–although honestly, sometimes the only reason I even suggest anything else is just to jerk her chain. But she says I’m hard like a diamond: tough and beautiful and almost impossible to cut.

What she doesn’t realizes is that she’s not describing me, she’s describing herself. She’s the one who’s strong and full of light. I’m dark and cold and hard in a brittle way, destined to break because I’m too stubborn to bend. But then…maybe I am a diamond. Because if I remember right, for all their hardness, diamonds are deceptively brittle too. All I know is I sure don’t feel like one.

Dinah doesn’t need that. She doesn’t need to be hard like me. I don’t want her to be.

But now all I can do is wait, and watch, and hope she somehow comes through this fire with fewer scars than my personal furnace left on me…

I hope she comes out a diamond.

II. Dinah

I never knew I could hurt this much. I thought the worst pain I could ever feel was when Mom left me with no explanation. Left me to the not-so-tender mercies of the Redmonds. My own mother abandoned me–how could anything ever cut deeper?

I couldn’t imagine losing her again just after I found her. If that cut like a knife in my heart, then this cuts like a diamond. Sharper than even glass, and harder.

We studied that, in school, years ago. How there was no stone on earth harder than a diamond. Nothing that could cut one except another diamond. It didn’t take a huge leap in logic after that, and after cutting my hand on a piece of glass once, to figure out how much a cut from a diamond would hurt.

My mother was like a diamond. I see that now. I always believed she was so hard, so cold. But looking into her eyes as she said she was proud of me…I realized there were so many facets just sparkling with light that I’d never seen. And now I never will. I’ll never be able to explore just how beautiful she was. All I see, all I feel is the pain of her absence.

Is this how Helena felt? Is this why it’s so hard for her to trust anyone, to let anyone close? Or was the hurt even worse for her…she, who had known and loved her mother every day of her life, even if she never knew her father. How did she get through it without breaking?

I wanted so much to be like her. From the moment Barbara first told me the story of the Black Canary, I idolized the very mother I’d hated for eleven long years. I looked up to her legend almost as much as I admire Helena.

That’s what made it so hard to accept that they were one and the same. But now…now that I understand…now that I want her to stay, she’s gone. She’s dead. And you can’t come back from being dead.

I thought diamonds were supposed to be forever.

III. Barbara

Sometimes I wish that I had never told Carolyn about Helena. About how her mother’s death shaped her, strengthened her. I wish I’d never told her that as much as I would love to go back and change the night Selina died for Helena’s sake, I couldn’t bring myself to regret what it made her. Because as much as she hates to admit it, it made her strong enough to stop being a child and start being a hero.

Just like it did with Bruce.

Oh, I’m not as naïve as Helena thinks I am. I know it scarred her too. I know she still harbors a hatred for the man who killed her mother that is so black it could swallow her whole if she’d let it. But what she doesn’t realize is that the same event that gave her that hate made her strong enough to resist it. A mountain came to rest on her shoulders that night, but the pressure created a diamond.

I just wish I’d never spoken or breathed a word of that to Carolyn. I wanted her to see Helena as more than just the daughter of Catwoman. But part of me knows her too well. Well enough to know how far she would go for someone she loved.

Dinah hasn’t been able to talk much, yet, about that night, but Helena told me what Carolyn said to her when she believed she was dying. She finally accepted who her daughter had chosen to become, and was proud of her for it. But what Dinah doesn’t know is that acceptance wouldn’t have killed her mother’s fierce protective instincts.

It would have made her desperate to give her child the strength she needs to be the hero she wants to be. Too desperate to see there is no greater strength a human being can have than a loving family. For it is a tensile strength like gold, not the hard unmoving strength of a stone, even a gemstone.

That’s what I can’t tell Helena. That’s the fear I don’t dare even entertain in Dinah’s presence. That Carolyn could have–and quite possibly would have–thrown away the only second chance she may ever have with a daughter who is just starting to learn to love her.

All for want of a diamond.

IV. Carolyn

Take a lump of coal, apply enough heat, time and pressure, and you end up with a diamond. The wrong amount of any of the three, and you still have a lump of coal. Dark and brittle and quickly reduced to ash.

I know she’ll never forgive me for what I’ve done. She’ll never be able to forgive me for leaving again, for letting her believe I was dead. But I had to do it. When she came after me that night, I saw myself in her eyes. The girl who’d discovered she had a gift and was determined to use it for good, damn the consequences. And I knew I’d never be able to sway her. I knew she’d found her destiny.

There was only one thing left that I could do to protect her. I had to make her strong enough to survive the life she’d chosen. She had been my weakness, all those years ago, the one thing I couldn’t risk for the cause. I couldn’t let myself be hers.

My daughter is beautiful, but as long as she knows I’m alive, she’s brittle. Breakable. So even though it broke my heart, I put her into the fire, trusting that Barbara and, yes, even Helena will be there to see that she emerges whole and strong like a gem, not charred and scattered like ash.

It’s the only gift I have left to give.

Sooner or later, she’ll find out. I know she will. Because now that I know she’s here, I won’t be able to stay away for long. And when that day comes, I won’t earn her trust again. I’ve lost her forever just as surely as if I were dead.

But if I have to lose my daughter to save her, so be it.

That’s the price of a diamond.

Fic: Let Sleeping Ghosts Lie (B5, Susan/Marcus)

Author’s Note: Co-written with Medie for fandom_stocking a couple of years ago.

She was beautiful when she was sleeping. Of course, to his eyes, Susan Ivanova was always beautiful, even when she was doing her utmost to conceal the fact. Still, there was something quite profound about seeing her like this: the cares of the day shed and, with them, all the lines and angles that hardened her face in the waking hours. She looked like an angel.

Well, he certainly couldn’t have that. Smiling impishly, the intruder in Susan’s quarters leaned over the sleeping captain and said softly but mischievously in her ear: “Boo!”

Susan surged to consciousness in a swift, hard, snap. Stiff with tension, she stared through the darkness at her cabin wall.

For a moment, she wasn’t certain she’d heard what she thought that she had. Except — “Marcus?”

“Oh, bollocks,” the figure hovering over her bed complained, grinning like the maniac he was. “I was rather hoping for a scream. Should’ve known better, I suppose, but hope springs eternal.”

Susan flopped onto her back, staring up at him with muted astonishment. Astonishment because, yes, there was indeed a spirit hovering above her bed. Muted because, well, it was obvious that such a thing would be happening. Things had been far too normal for far too long and she might have known it would happen.

One never could truly escape Bablyon 5 and its magnetic effects.

“Perhaps you should have appeared naked,” Susan said, her tone bland. “It would have been truly horrifying.”

Marcus’ eyes widened. If possible, his madman’s smile got even bigger. “Is that a suggestion?” He popped out of existence, but only for an instant, reappearing a heartbeat later now sitting on the foot of the bed…in the nude. “How’s that? Better?”

Susan clapped a hand over her eyes. “I wasn’t SERIOUS.” If she had any questions as to his identity, that stunt certainly put answer to them. “Marcus, other than arranging an early introduction to hell, what are you doing here?”

“I’ve absolutely no idea,” was the cheerful answer. “The last thing I remember is, well, dying, naturally. And considering I never really gave much credence to the notion of an afterlife, I’m probably as surprised as you are.” He laughed. “Not that I’m not enjoying myself immensely.”

Naturally Marcus would be a cheerful spirit. “Technically, you’re not dead,” Susan said, nearly choking on the words. It was true, in a manner of speaking. Should Stephen find a way, Marcus might be revived. She swallowed, trying for a cheerfully sarcastic tone. “Which means it’s more likely that this is purgatory. For you, at least.”

“Why should it be purgatory when I can imagine no fairer heaven than an eternity by your side?” was the melodramatic answer, melodramatically answered. She opened one eye cautiously to peek at him–fully clothed again, thank G-d–and he grinned back at her. “Oh Captain, My Captain.”

Susan groaned. “Purple language and bad poetry? It must be you.” Pulling the thin blanket closer, she watched him. “You really don’t know why you’re here?”

She remembered a report about an incident on Babylon 5 (of course) but doubted this had anything to do with it. The Brakiri Day of the Dead was over and, at any rate, they had no Brakiri on board to complicate matters.

No, this was something else entirely.

“None whatsoever. Not that I’m complaining.” Marcus stretched out, leaning back on the empty air as if lounging in a recliner. “Except I did rather hope you’d be a little happy to see me.”

“Of course I am,” Susan said, giving him a disgusted look. “It’s just — difficult.” Not that it should have been. Aliens, First Ones, old friends resurrecting from the dead, why not from temporary suspended animation? “I’m not accustomed to spectral peeping Toms.”

“A fellow can’t help where he materializes,” Marcus protested in a voice of mock (she hoped) injury. He smirked again. “Though if you’d prefer a spectral paramour, I’d be more than happy to oblige.”

“Of course you would.” With a smile, Susan inched forward on the bed. “However, you’re going to have to remain perpetually disappointed.”

“Eternally, even.” He let out a long-suffering sigh. “You’re a hard woman, Susan Ivanova. Don’t suppose it would help if I said it isn’t necrophilia if the dead party is conscious?” At her cold look he shrugged. “No, didn’t think so. Ah, well. On the bright side, at least I shan’t know what I’m missing.”

Susan folded her arms. “Even in quasi-death you’re incorrigible, Marcus. You really came all this way just to flirt?”

“Flirt?” he tried to sound indignant but his eyes were twinkling too much to make it convincing. “The doomed soul bridges time, space and death to spend one last night in the arms of his beloved? Why, it’s in the finest romantic traditions. Though, granted,” he amended quickly. “In those it’s far more likely the woman who died a virgin.”

She grinned at that. “You’re not dead, remember? Just temporarily out of action.” A disturbing thought occured to her and she looked at him with suspicion. “Do you think you might have — because of THAT?”

The idea seemed to intrigue him. “In the ‘and then I can die happy’ sense? Well, it would certainly be true, and very kind of the Universe to go out of its way to grant one man’s humble wish.” He looked at her, and for probably the first time since she’d met him, he was serious. “I won’t ask for anything you’re not willing to give, though.”

Susan’s grin widened. “You’re a spirit. It doesn’t seem like there’d be much that you could do otherwise.” The mechanics of it certainly presented a challenge, but with the Universe, Susan had learned not to argue. She leaned forward with the intent of kissing him. “But we can give it a shot.”

When after a long moment, Susan still felt nothing, she opened her eyes to see him just looking at her rather forlornly. “When I said ‘willing’, I suppose I should have just been honest and said ‘wanting.’ You know what I feel for you, Susan. It’s a good deal more than one night granted out of pity would ever satisfy. If you don’t feel the same…I think I’d be better off as I am.”

With her most creative of curses, one her father would have been scandalized by, Susan leveled a glare at him. “Would I ever kiss someone if I didn’t mean it?”

Marcus looked shocked, then elated. “You mean…truly?”

“MARCUS!” Susan snapped. “OF COURSE!” She was tempted to dive for him, but of course, a wish to avoid an ungraceful bellyflop to the floor prevented it. All of which she communicated with another glare. “If I could grab you — ”

The smile that lit his face was the brightest one she’d ever seen, without even a hint of his usual manic glee. No, instead he practically glowed from within with pure joy. Maybe even literally. Much to the surprise of both of them, Marcus grabbed her shoulders in two surprisingly solid hands, then leaned forward and kissed her so hard it took her breath away.

When he finally let go, Marcus laughed aloud and exclaimed, “Now, there’s reason to come back from the dead!”

Susan allowed a little laugh. “I suppose that’s supposed to be a compli–”

She stopped suddenly when she realized he was fading, and fading fast. Only a heartbeat later, he was gone and the room was empty, though she could still feel phantom hands on her skin for one more lingering moment before they too vanished.

Susan got out of bed, turning in a quick circle, despite knowing she wouldn’t find him anywhere. She pinched herself, wincing even as she realized it hadn’t been a dream. She was perfectly awake.

Almost as if on cue, the comm beeped.

Tapping the console, Susan pushed the peculiar visitation from her mind. “Ivanova, go.”

“Captain, you have a call coming through on Gold Channel.” Her XO hesitated before adding, “It’s from Babylon 5.”

Her blood running cold, Susan looked at the screen. “Put it through,” she said quietly.

To her surprise, Stephen Franklin’s face appeared. She hadn’t even known he was still on Babylon 5, or rather, there again.

“Commander–I mean, Captain…sorry about that, old habits.” He smiled. “I have some good news…thought you’d want to be the first to know.”

Susan groaned. “I’m going to kill him.”

Fic: This Is the Time (CJ, Jordan/Woody)

She thought she’d wrung out all the tears she had to cry in the crypt, staring down at Elaine’s body and struggling to apologize for her angry words. She of all people should’ve known better than to mistake compassion for cowardice. So she’d sobbed and begged forgiveness alone in the presence of the woman who could have been her friend if she’d been able to look beyond her own prejudice. And when her eyes burned dry because they didn’t even have enough tears left to moisten them, she collected herself and went back out to be the stoic stone of help for her grieving co-workers.

She thought she was done crying then.

But when the snow stopped sifting down from the angry gray clouds, when the roads were clear enough for her to fight her way home, she found herself turning instead down a street she knew but that wasn’t her own. And when Woody opened the door and she realized where it was that she’d gone…the tears started falling again.

“Jordan?” He was through the door in a flash, pulling her into his arms and guiding her into the welcoming warmth of his living room. “My God…Jordan, what’s wrong?”

She beat at him, fighting the comfort of his embrace even as she buried her face in the soft cotton of his shirt. “Elaine…oh, God, Woody…I told her–I accused her…”

She choked on the knot in her throat, unable to force anything more through her larynx than an incoherent, wailing sob. For several ragged breaths she kept fighting to speak, to vocalize the regret, the feeling of failure, and the fear for Garrett and Winslow who were still fighting for their lives somewhere between here and Baltimore. Finally, she gave up and collapsed against Woody’s side, limply clinging to his solid form as he carried her gently and sank down with her on the couch.

He didn’t ask what had happened, just held on. This wasn’t the time for questions or explanations or even words of comfort. It was time to grieve, time to let herself feel everything she’d fought all through the snowfall to postpone.

Time to just let Woody hold her until the storm had passed.

Fic: Faith (CJ, Jordan/Woody)

Author’s Note: Written shortly after “Miracles and Wonders,” at which point I had only been watching the series for a few weeks, so I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Jordan’s background is a little off. Oh well. *g*

I stopped believing in God when he took Paul away from me. I know, that sounds about as logical as marching up to the girl who stole your boyfriend and telling her she must not exist because if she did, she wouldn’t have done it. But it made me doubt, and doubt can be a powerful thing when you’re young and bitter. I’d been told all my life by priests that everything has a purpose, a reason, but I couldn’t see any reason for Paul to walk away from me. At least not any good one. So if God didn’t have his reasons, maybe there was no God–it was a hell of a lot better option than believing God was just out to get me, or didn’t care one way or the other.

And then I went into medicine, and the more I began to consider myself a scientist, the more justified I felt I was in rejecting the idea of a God–loving or otherwise–somewhere up there. There was no divine creator of the universe with a master plan and a reason for everything. No one to be disappointed in. No one to let me down again. Only matter and energy and chaos and coincidence and chance.

But suddenly I’m forced to wonder if I was wrong. If maybe there was a reason Paul left me all those years ago. If maybe that reason was so that I’d find myself standing here today, across from this man.

He smiles at me, squeezing my hand, and I find I almost can’t breathe with happiness. And as silly as it seems, I feel as though everything that’s happened in my life has been funneling me towards this moment. A moment I would never have had if Paul left me for his God. If Mom hadn’t died. If Dad hadn’t lost his badge. If my heart hadn’t been broken a thousand times or more since by a hundred different scumbags.

Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean that I’m suddenly happy that all those things happened to me. I would give anything to have my mother here today, to see this. But…I guess all I’m saying is that if this was the destination, I have a new appreciation for the journey.

He looks at me again and I smile back at him, hoping the words I’m about to say will communicate even one tenth of what I feel right now.

“I, Jordan, take you Woodrow, to be my lawfully wedded husband…”

God, if you’re there…thank you.
