Fic: How Much For Just the Planet? (DW/NCIS, gen)

Author’s Note: Blame Medie for this one–I asked her for Eight&Abby drabble prompts to help get me started on my tardis_bigbang fic, and this is what she came up with. How could I resist? 🙂

“Abby Sciuto,” the Doctor declared in a tone of bemused pride, “Naq’Le’cheza’q champion of the Nine Galaxies.”

Abby shot him a smug grin in return. “Not bad for a beginner, huh? Now I just have to figure out what I won.” She opened her hands to reveal a wad of the local currency and several other trinkets liberated from her overconfident opponents. “What exactly is a Vorja, anyway?”

“A planet in the Orion sector,” the Doctor answered. “Small but hospitable.”

Abby’s eyes about popped out. “A planet? No way!” She stared at the deed in her hands. “Maybe I’d better give it back.”

“Considering the previous landlord?” The Doctor nodded discreetly towards the sour-faced alien in question. “I rather think the Vorjani might not mind a change of ownership. Shall we make that our next destination? Give you a chance to survey your domain?”

“Sure.” Abby beamed. “I own a planet. How cool is that?”

Fic: Bagpipes on Mars (DW/NCIS, gen)

Author’s Note: Both the title and the plot–such as there is–were inspired by the Enter the Haggis song of the same name.

The door of the TARDIS banged closed as Abby and the Doctor fell against it, both out of breath, both grinning like maniacs.

The Doctor looked at his companion. “Well. That was fun, wasn’t it?” he asked cheerfully.

“Surprisingly, it was.” Abby smirked back at him. “Good thing you know how to play the bagpipes, though, or it might not’ve been.”

He laughed and sprang to his feet, helping Abby up then practically skipping over to the control console with her at his heels. “Yes, who knew bagpipes could be such an effective sonic weapon against Ice Warriors? I’ll have to remember that in future.”

He threw a couple of switches then looked up at her again. “So. Where to next?”

Abby laughed. “Bagpipes and Martians all in one afternoon? You really think you can top that?”

The Doctor’s eyes took on a knowing, mischievous gleam. “I know I can.”

“In that case? Surprise me.”

Fic: Hypercubes, Carpetbags, and Other Four-Dimensional Spaces (DW/NCIS, gen)

Author’s Note: Any misuse or abuse of the concept of a hypercube and/or tesseract is entirely on me and I apologize in advance for it if there is any–I did my research, but math was never my strong point so I’m sorry if I missed or misunderstood anything. Also, I am assuming for the purpose of this story that Abby is the same age as Pauley Perrette. This story is set shortly after the 1996 TV movie for Doctor Who, and pre-series for NCIS. And thanks to my beta, mari4212.

“Pardon me: I don’t mean to be rude but could you possibly tell me where I am?”

The man was dressed like Oscar Wilde, with romantic curls falling to the shoulders of his green velvet frock coat and a grey silk cravat tucked into a matching waistcoat. He was also standing in front of a large, old-fashioned blue phone booth with the words “Police Box” over the door, like something you might find in an old British movie.

Abby Sciuto loved Oscar Wilde and old British movies.

“Sure,” she answered, giving the man a chipper smile and a sly once over. “You, my fine friend, are at the world famous University of New Orleans, in the good old US of A.”

“Still on Earth, then,” he mused with a mild frown, bringing one hand up thoughtfully to his lips. “You wouldn’t also happen to know the year, would you?”

“1989.” Abby looked impressed. “That must’ve been some party! But then I knew that, if the party favors are anything to go by.”

The stranger sighed, reaching out a hand to caress the blue box as if it were a favorite car. “So. Not very far at all, then. Not really surprising: we took a bit of a beating back there, didn’t we, old girl?”

“So how do you move her?”

He glanced up, looking bewildered. “What?”

Abby pointed at the phone booth. “The big blue party favor. How’d you get her all the way here from…wherever you were coming from? I don’t see a forklift around anywhere…”

An enigmatic smile curled the edge of the stranger’s lips. “Oh, it’s quite simple, really. Would you like to see?” He gestured towards the door.

Abby’s eyebrows shot up until they disappeared into her bangs, although the smirk never faded. “Okay, not to be rude or anything? But asking a total stranger, ‘Hey, wanna see my big blue box?’ is like the lamest pick-up line ever.”

The man looked properly chastised. “You’re quite right: how terribly thoughtless of me.” He stuck a hand out. “I’m the Doctor, by the way.”

She grinned, clasping the offered hand firmly in her own. “Abby Sciuto.”

The Doctor answered her grin with a brilliant one of his own, blue eyes dancing with mischief and joie de vivre. “So, Abby Sciuto: now that we’ve been properly introduced, would you like to see my big blue box?”

Abby thought about it for less than a second before answering, “Why not? Just one thing…” She held up her wrist, gesturing to the black leather band fastened around it. “These spikes? Not just for show. Try anything hinky–“

He flashed her a smile as bright as the sun. “You have my word. Now: ready?”

Pulling what looked like some sort of odd pendant from a chain around his neck, he slipped it into a keyhole *under* the keyhole in the door and turned the lock. With one last enigmatic glance–with all the allure of an exotic vacation in those smoke-blue eyes–he stepped inside, leaving the door open behind him. There was light shining somewhere inside, but it seemed oddly far away considering the size of the structure.

Abby followed, only to stop dead on the threshold.

If the outside was a phone booth, then the inside could be better described as a cathedral, a cavernous gothic structure with windows streaming with light, a full library and sitting room and some sort of hexagonal control console dwarfed beneath six enormous metal support struts. Even more incredible, while the room itself seemed to stretch on almost into infinity, somewhere across the enormous space she could see glimpses of doorways, hallways, even stairways.

While Abby’s mind tried to wrap itself around the impossible sight meeting her eyes, the Doctor headed straight for the control platform, beginning to fiddle with knobs and switches in an almost haphazard manner.

“It’s a tesseract!” she finally blurted out.

That got his attention. The Doctor stopped what he was doing and pivoted on one heel to stare at Abby as though she were suddenly the most remarkable thing he’d ever seen. “So it is–very good!” he answered in a tone of surprised but pleased approval. “You know your four-dimensional geometry: most of my companions never would have thought of that.”

“Blame D&D–you wouldn’t believe the uses they find for dimensional pockets,” Abby quipped. “Or Mary Poppins–I always wanted that carpetbag.” She stepped inside, letting the door swing gently closed behind her as she continued to take in her incredible surroundings. “This is so cool! Is it just a hypercube, or can you actually bend space and time with it like in Madeleine L’Engle?”

His smile broadened impossibly. “I can indeed, though not in quite the same manner. Abby, I’d like you to meet the TARDIS: stands for Time and Relative Dimension in Space. She can take you anywhere in the universe, anywhen–past, present or future. Just name it.”

Abby regarded him skeptically. “And have me home in time for my eight o’clock class?”

“Absolutely. So? Where would you like to go first?”

First? She almost laughed out loud. First implied that there would be a second, maybe even a third, a fourth and a hundredth. But then again…how many girls got to travel around time and space inside a hypercube disguised as a phone booth? Hell, she’d given serious thought to taking a year off from school to travel the world–this way she could do it and still graduate on time. Abby shook her head in amazement. The possibilities were endless, and yet no more than five minutes ago she would’ve called the whole idea crazy.

Five minutes: that was about how long she’d known the man who was offering her the universe, and yet she was seriously close to accepting. Maybe she was crazy. “You work this fast with all the girls?”

The Doctor paused, handsome features resolving into a puzzled frown. “You know, I don’t know!” A sheepish smile took its place and then he added, “I’m still a bit new to myself, you see.”

Ironically, it was that cryptic statement that finally, irrevocably won her trust. Because that was how he seemed: new. Like a man reborn, eager to see the universe through brand new eyes. Abby was hardly old and cynical herself, but like New Orleans, she’d seen a bit of both the best and the worst that humanity had to offer.

Maybe it was time to see what the rest of the universe had to offer.

“Well, I don’t want to get too ambitious,” she teased. “You show me your best moves right out of the gate, I won’t have anything to come back for. So how about starting small: the planet Mars in the year five thousand.”

The Doctor smiled. “Perfect.”

Fic: Five Couples Jack Harkness Never Slept With part 5/5 (DW/SGA, Jack/Sheppard/Weir)

Stargate Atlantis: Back to Basics

“The thing about sex,” Captain Jack Harkness explained. “Is that you people always assume it complicates things. I think it simplifies them.”

John Sheppard eyed him suspiciously over his midnight snack, probably wondering how they’d gotten on the subject. Daedalus’ mess hall was deserted, except for the two of them–everyone else, including the rest of the Torchwood team, having already gone to bed–so there was no one to rescue him from the conversation, which suited Jack just fine. “Well, sure, I’ve had my share of one night stands–”

Jack shook his head. “That’s not what I mean.”

Sheppard’s eyes narrowed. “Then what do you mean?”

In answer, Jack leaned across the table, took the other man’s face in both hands and kissed him. At first, John reacted like most “straight” twentieth-century military men–not at all–but before long his curiosity got the better of him and he tentatively started to respond. Jack had been counting on it.

Of course, as soon as he let him go, Sheppard darted a quick glance around the mess hall, presumably to make sure they were still alone, and then shot him a dirty look.

“You see?” Jack stated, smiling wryly. “Simple.”

“Not really,” John hedged, dropping his eyes to his mug.

“I never said there weren’t complications,” Jack clarified. “Just that me kissing you wasn’t one of them. In fact, I’d bet that whatever ‘complication’ you’re thinking about has a lot more to do with someone you’d like to be having sex with, but aren’t.”

He knew he was right the minute the other man started to fidget in his seat, so decided to press his point. “Or maybe what’s complicated is what society tells you that you should feel about sex. That being in a sexual relationship with someone you love will make you unable to make rational judgments in dangerous situations if they’re involved, never mind the fact that you’re probably already pretty irrational where they’re concerned. They tell you that you can’t be attracted to or have feelings for more than one person, or more than one gender, and if you do then you’re betraying your partners. Sex itself isn’t complicated–what’s complicated is all the rules you’re supposed to apply to it.” He couldn’t help a trace of bitterness that crept into his voice on that last part, and winced–usually he was able to hide it better than that.

“So if you’re so sure of that, why aren’t you sleeping with your team?” John shot back, a smugly satisfied tone in his voice that suggested he thought he’d made a hit.

Jack shot him a dangerously smoldering look in return. “Who says I’m not?”

That took the other man aback. “All four of them?”

Jack shrugged. “No. They’re not ready for that. But that’s the complication, not the sex itself.” He set his cup down and leaned back to study the man across from him. “I’d be willing to bet that if you actually slept with that person or persons you’re thinking of right now, and then refused to feel guilty about it, it would make not just your relationship, but your life a whole lot simpler.”

“Easy for you to say,” Sheppard grumbled into his coffee cup.

“Shouldn’t you boys be in bed?” an amused female voice broke in suddenly from behind Jack.

Sheppard just about jumped out of his seat, almost knocking over his coffee cup in the process and seeming to choke on the mouthful he’d just taken. Intrigued by and highly suspicious of the guilty expression that had sprung onto the Lieutenant Colonel’s face and the way he seemed determined not to meet the newcomer’s eyes, Jack glanced back to see who had joined them. He grinned broadly at a sight he’d almost been expecting: that of Doctor Elizabeth Weir. Enter complication, he thought smugly to himself.

“Good timing. I was just trying to convince Colonel Sheppard of the same thing,” Jack drawled with a slow, seductive smile. Though she was free to assume otherwise, the empty chair at the table was not what he had in mind when he concluded with, “Why don’t you join us?”

Fic: Five Couples Jack Harkness Never Slept With part 4/5 (DW/SG-1, Jack/Vala/Daniel)

Stargate SG-1: In For a Penny

“So, here’s the problem,” Vala Mal Doran stated, setting her drink down on the bar and folding her hands in front of her. “I know Daniel’s attracted to me, he’s just got a very bad case of denial. I’ve done my best to persuade him of this, but apparently I must be doing something wrong, as it doesn’t seem to be working.”

Jack set down his martini. “Which is where I come in.”

“Well, it makes a good deal of sense,” she argued with a sly smile. “And it was dreadfully kind of you to give me that temporal locator beacon or whatever it was. I did think about selling it, but I’m rather glad I didn’t–it’s proved useful, as you can see.” She covered his hand with hers, lips widening in a wicked smile and the gleam in her eyes bringing back pleasant memories. “But anyway, when my powers of persuasion fail, clearly the only thing left to do is bring in the one man I know who’s even more persuasive, and we combine forces. Which is exactly where you come in.”

He pretended to consider, but a smile matching hers in mischief was already trying to work its way onto his face. “So what does this Daniel Jackson look like?”

“Gorgeous,” she stated simply. “Tall, perfect body, face a sculptor would kill for, and the most amazing blue eyes.” She looked Jack up and down once, then smirked. “Rather like yourself, actually, although truth be told he doesn’t look a bit like you either.”

Jack grinned. “That’s okay. I like variety.”

Vala poked her tongue out between her teeth in a display that was girlish and seductive all at once. Her voice dipped into a low, sultry tone that he loved. “Oh, I remember. So, have we got a deal?”

“Depends,” he teased, delighting almost as much in tormenting her as he would when the torment ended in favor of a different kind. “What’s in it for me?”

Vala looked at him, doing her best to look disappointed. “Really, Jack. If I have to tell you that, you’re clearly not the man I’ve always believed you to be.”

That made him laugh out loud. “You’ve got a deal.”

Right on cue, a man matching Vala’s description entered the bar and made straight towards them. Only she’d forgotten to mention the glasses, which somehow not only completed but enhanced the whole picture.

“Vala, how many times do I have to tell you not to run off?” Daniel fumed, and Jack couldn’t help but think of how all that energy could be redirected. If he hadn’t been interested before, he certainly would be now.

“Dreadfully sorry, Daniel, I was just having a drink with Jack here, who just happens to be is one of my oldest…acquaintances.”

That stopped Daniel in the middle of whatever he’d been intending to say. “He’s…what?”

Jack grinned and stuck out a hand. “Captain Jack Harkness. You must be Daniel Jackson–I’ve heard all about you.”

The other man frowned. “Ah…exactly how much is ‘all’?”

Jack made a show of glancing around at the very public place they were in before suggesting in his most persuasive voice, “Shouldn’t we find ourselves somewhere a bit more…private, before I answer that?”

Fic: Five Couples Jack Harkness Never Slept With part 3/5 (DW/TW/HL, Jack/Methos/Amanda)

Highlander: Careful What You Wish For

The first time he slept with Methos, he’d still been a Time Agent, on vacation in Ancient Rome. Pompeii, to be exact–he’d always had a fondness for Pompeii–about fifteen years before the eruption of Vesuvius. Getting a cover there was easy–a prostitute, especially a male one, who was as good looking and healthy as Jack was, and seemed to be immune to most of the diseases rampant at the time? Always in high demand.

Jack had been a Saturnalia gift to the senator’s old friend–neither senator nor Jack had known at the time just how old.

The first time he slept with Amanda, it had been at Versailles, during the time of Louis XV. They were both after a priceless piece of jewelry owned by the king’s mistress, Madame de Pompadour–Amanda because it was a priceless piece of jewelry, Jack because there was something suspiciously non-terrestrial (or at least non-contemporary) about it. They’d gotten distracted by each other, however, and both failed to retrieve it. But there was a certain satisfaction still to be had in being able to say he’d had sex in the King of France’s own bed while he was at a party elsewhere in the palace.

The first time he’d slept with both of them had been in 1929 in New York, only a few weeks before the stock market crash. He’d recognized them both at a speakeasy, and had been more than a little surprised when they’d both recognized him too. If it had been just one, it could have been a coincidental run-in with a fellow Time Agent, but both was a little more unlikely. Unless they were traveling forward in time the old fashioned way–linearly. It had taken a lot of talking, a little more of his own story than he technically should be sharing, and a lot of bathtub gin, but he’d eventually found out they were both Immortal.

“You’ve got it all,” he told them later that night when they were lying tangled together in Amanda’s bed. “Me, I can visit any period in history I like, but I can’t really live there, get to know it inside and out. If someone like you ever became a Time Agent…they’d have the entire universe at their fingertips, and infinite time to explore it.”

Methos started to protest, but Amanda smacked him with a pillow. “Oh, don’t bore him with some old lecture about the Game, and how being Immortal’s not all fun and games. Especially considering you and I are the last people qualified–we’ve spent more time running away from the Game than fighting it.”

The second time he slept with both of them had been in Paris in the 1990s. He’d shot himself in front of them, watched as the wounds closed up and then dropped to his knees begging, “What the hell happened to me? Am I one of you?”

They’d had no answers to offer him–whatever he was, he wasn’t part of the Game any more than he was still part of the human race–but they had offered comfort, and he’d clung to it until morning. Then he’d gotten up before either of them and fled his own shattered hopes.

Fic: Five Couples Jack Harkness Never Slept With part 2/5 (DW/NCIS, Jack/Gibbs/DiNozzo)

NCIS: When the Pupil is Ready

Something about the late twentieth, early twenty-first century seemed to have produced a lot of territorial alpha males. If the way he was glaring at Jack was anything to go by, Special Agent Jethro Gibbs was definitely one of them. The question was: was he being territorial about the case–which meant nothing to Jack except it stood between him and his latest piece of priceless space junk–or about the way Jack was shamelessly checking out Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo, whose hand he’d just taken. Probably a bit of both.

“It’s a pleasure…” Jack drawled in his most charming tone of voice, before turning to Agent Gibbs and blatantly giving him a once-over as well. “I have a feeling we’d work very well together. But since Agent Gibbs here doesn’t seem to like that idea, let me just get what I need for my investigation and I’ll be on my way…”

Gibbs just grunted something unintelligible, and Tony immediately pulled his hand out of Jack’s, taking a step back probably without even realizing he’d done so.

Jack glanced from one to the other, a broad grin spreading across his face. Oh yeah, they were a couple, even if they didn’t know it yet.

Fortunately, Jack had always considered himself an excellent teacher. He strode past them, discreetly pocketed the worthless trinket he’d come for, and walked back over to the two men, slapping them both on the back. “So. What does NCIS do for fun?”

Fic: Five Couples Jack Harkness Never Slept With part 1/5 (DW/TS, Jack/Jim/OC)

The Sentinel: A Sense of Adventure

Jack had heard about Sentinels. By his time, they were mostly extinct again, but the combination of genes responsible for it had a remarkable knack for resurfacing when needed. The late twentieth century had been one of those times.

What he hadn’t heard, but had deduced on his own thanks largely in part to an overactive and extremely graphic imagination, was that sex with a Sentinel–or two–could either be mind-blowing beyond belief or utter torture…or both. With that kind of sensory acuity, the slightest touch could potentially send a partner over the edge, and just thinking about that had fueled more than a few of his favorite fantasies.

Now that he was standing on a street in Cascade, being placed under arrest for a crime he hadn’t committed by two Sentinels, the only hard part was deciding which one to seduce first. On the one hand, there was Detective James Ellison, the first twentieth century Sentinel on record, with the body of a Hercules, the face of an Adonis and piercing blue eyes. On the other, Canada’s first Sentinel of record, Annie Langdon, stood beside him, looking like an avenging angel with her long yellow hair and eyes as blue as her lover’s in some lights, and a brilliant jade green in others.

To say he was turned on would be something of an understatement.

“Look, I didn’t kill him,” he argued calmly. “I just stumbled across the guy a second before you two did. And I can prove it to you.” He looked straight at Annie. “You’re both Sentinels. Is my scent anywhere on him?”

Suddenly Jack found himself being slammed against the wall of the alley, Ellison’s voice growling so close in his ear that he could feel the other man’s breath: “How the hell do you know about that?”

A heartbeat later, Langdon’s gun came to rest against his temple. “I’d answer him if I were you,” she stated cooly. “Especially since if I can smell your arousal, so can Jim, and he’s a bit…territorial when it comes to me.”

Jack laughed. Forget choosing, he wanted them both, and the sooner the better. “Hey, you two are legends in my time. I wouldn’t dream of coming between you…except maybe in the literal sense.” His hips twitched almost of their own volition, and Ellison had him pinned bodily enough that he couldn’t help but grind against the man a little in the process.

He saw Langdon glance over at Ellison, and could imagine the look the other Sentinel gave her in return.

“Let me go and I’ll tell you everything you want to know,” he promised with a grin that quickly turned into a leer. “Along with a few things you probably don’t. But I’ll make it worth your while.”

Five Couples Jack Harkness Never Slept With

Written for Medie for Christmas, so the first bit is set in her Counterparts Sentinel AU. Each chapter can be read independently of all the others if you’re not familiar with all the crossovers. Also, written shortly after “Everything Changes” aired, so not canon compliant with anything in Torchwood past early series 1.

Broken up into chapters so those who want to read only the parts involving fandoms they know can do so. *g*

Fic: A Greater Compliment part 9/9 (DW, gen)

“Benton?”

“Are you kidding me?” Charley asked with a laugh. “Benton’s a good bloke, but he wouldn’t know which end of a computer was up if you hit him with it.”

“Yates?”

Charley shook her head. “Retired, like the Brigadier. Only he didn’t keep his clearance when he left active duty like the Brigadier did.”

The Doctor grimaced. “And nearly everyone else I knew was down in that room. It doesn’t have to be UNIT: what we need is just someone who understands computers well enough to hack a submarine.”

Well, Charley could think of one person with the computer to pull it off, but she highly doubted she’d much like the idea. She sighed, dropping her head in her hands. They’d been working all night, trying to figure this out. If they didn’t come up with something soon, the UN would finish deliberations and release the codes before they could. “God. Why didn’t we just stay at the Brigadier’s and watch it all on telly?” she moaned.

The Doctor’s head snapped up, just as it had last night when he’d finally figured out what the Slitheen were after. “What did you say?”

Charley started to repeat it, but the Doctor cut her off. He turned to Harriet. “Are there CCTV cameras inside Downing Street?”

Harriet opened and shut her mouth a couple of times. “I…I don’t know. I’ve never noticed any.”

The Doctor grimaced. “What about TV cameras? Reporters? This place was crawling with them earlier.”

“Not anymore, though,” Charley pointed out. “At least, I doubt it. Not with the Slitheen running about out of uniform. Why?”

“You said it yourself: proof.” The Doctor began to pace, his brow furrowed in concentration. “If we could just get some sort of image of the Slitheen in their natural state, broadcast it to the UN, somehow I think it just might be enough to convince them where the real threat lies.”

“But we don’t have a camera,” Harriet pointed out.

“No,” Charley sprang to her feet, reaching for her phone again. “But I know someone who might.”

+++

“You know Sarah Jane?” The Doctor sounded as though he couldn’t quite believe it. “You’re friends with Sarah Jane Smith, and you never told me? Why not?”

Charley covered the phone with one hand and hissed at him, “For the same reason I didn’t tell her when I thought you’d been killed. You’re so bloody brilliant, you figure it out!” She then went back to her call. “Sarah Jane? So, do you think Mr. Smith could pull it off?”

“Oh, I think so,” Sarah Jane answered thoughtfully. “To tell the truth, I’ve never put him to the test quite that way. Hang on.”

Charley heard running footsteps, and then the alien computer’s usual fanfare. She listened as Sarah Jane explained the plan and heard Mr. Smith agree that yes, he could probably manage that.

“He’s zeroing in on Ten Downing Street now,” Sarah Jane said breathlessly as she came back to the phone. “Where did you say they’d be?”

“If they’re waiting on a call from the UN, probably the Prime Minister’s office,” Charley guessed. “That is where the special phone is kept, right?” She took a deep breath and let it out. “I just hope one of them decides to attend this meeting au naturel or we’re back to submarine missiles.”

“Hold on. Hold on, I think we’ve got something.” Another pause, then. “Oh. Oh my. Yes, that’s definitely the Prime Minister’s office, and I’d say those are definitely not humans!”

“Wonderful!” Charley exclaimed, turning to give a thumbs up to the Doctor.

The Doctor took a step closer. “May I?”

Charley handed it over, albeit reluctantly. Of course, she was almost sure that Sarah Jane had probably figured out by now that she was with the Doctor, but she still didn’t know how her friend would react to actually speaking to him for the first time in so many years.

“Sarah? Hello, it’s the Doctor. How’ve you been?” There was a long pause, then he smiled and said. “Good, good. Listen, love to chat, but we’ve got a planet to save. Can your Mr. Smith break the communications lock on this room as well…? Brilliant. Put me on.”

He handed Charley’s phone back to her. “We owe her a visit, for this,” she told him in a voice that brooked no argument.

The Doctor grinned. “Of course. Be lovely to see Sarah Jane again. But not right now.” Then he turned back to the speakerphone on the table, depressing the button that would connect him. “Hello, hello, is this the United Nations? Sorry to interrupt such an important meeting, but I think before you go making any decisions, there’s something you should know…”

+++

“So, that’s it then?” Charley asked as they stood outside Ten Downing Street several hours later, watching while men from UNIT loaded the surviving Slitheen into large laundry trucks at the point of a gun. “No more Slitheen, no more threat of nuclear war?”

“The former, yes. Can never say as to the latter, not with you humans,” the Doctor answered. His arms were folded carelessly across his chest as he looked out at the scene that could have been very different. Reporters were everywhere once again, but somehow in the melee one man in a leather jacket and one blonde girl had been overlooked. Thanks in large part to Ms. Harriet Jones, who was giving probably the best speech of her life to a group of journalists outside the gates.

Charley’s eyes found the MP in question. “Look at her. She’s a natural at all this.”

The Doctor grinned. “I thought I knew the name.”

Charley looked up at him. “Why? Who is she?”

“Harriet Jones, future Prime Minister.” He nodded in her direction. “Elected for three successive terms: the architect of Britain’s Golden Age.”

“Oh!” Charley exclaimed, looking at Harriet with new eyes. “Then I suppose it’s a good thing we didn’t get her killed.”

The Doctor laughed. “S’pose it is.”

+++

It was surprisingly easy to decide what to keep and what to let go of the life she’d built here. Not many clothes went into her one small suitcase; the TARDIS wardrobe was more than sufficient in that department and besides which, many of her own clothes were likely still in there. Toiletries: again, only what the TARDIS couldn’t provide. In the end it came down to a few souvenirs of the life she’d built here, her UNIT credentials (never know when they might come in useful – or get her killed, for that matter, but she was trying to be positive), and one family photo she’d acquired thanks to a generous and extremely open-minded grand-niece.

Charley emerged from the house after bidding Sir Alastair a tearful goodbye – well, tearful on her side, tears weren’t precisely his style – to find the Doctor standing with his back against the TARDIS.

“I’ve told him to go on and sell off the rest and put the money in an account for me,” she explained when the Doctor’s eyes drifted to her rather insignificant luggage. “Since I don’t know when I’ll be back, it seems more reasonable to just start over than to ask him to store it all for me.”

The Doctor didn’t answer, just watched her with a thoughtful frown on his face.

Charley tilted her head to one side and frowned back, concerned. “Doctor, what? What is it?”

“All that time you were here, working for UNIT, not making friends ‘cept for folks that might’ve known me. Were you…” He trailed off with another frown.

“Was I waiting for you, is that what you’re asking?” Charley finished for him.

He looked her dead in the eyes this time. “Yeah.”

“No,” she answered honestly. “I wasn’t waiting for you because I knew you weren’t coming back. I was sure I’d seen you die.” She thought about mentioning that he had, in fact, come back for her, but it had been an earlier him. He clearly didn’t remember that either, though, and she’d expected he wouldn’t. That Doctor had to forget her so her first wouldn’t know he ought to let her die. It was all a muddle, but that was what happened when you spent the early part of your life mixed up with a time traveller.

Either way, she’d been absolutely certain that the Doctor was out of her life forever. All she’d wanted was to live the rest of her life the way he’d taught her, in honour of his memory. “I made do. More than that, I’ve been happy here.”

She looked at him, all in black but for the succession of muted jumpers. So different from her first Doctor, with his silk cravats and velvet frock coats, or her second, with his riot of colours.

She thought about what he’d been through since they separated. A part of her wished she could have been there for him when he’d had to sacrifice his whole world to save the universe. Another part knew if she had, she’d have hated herself for failing to find a way to spare him that awful choice. Because that was her job, had always been her job ever since he’d saved her. She was the one who protected him – from his enemies, from himself – so he could go on doing what he did best, saving the universe. And she was the one who sacrificed him to save the universe if that’s what he asked of her.

Not because he defined her, but because she knew so clearly who she was. She was Charlotte Pollard, the girl who lived when she should have died. The girl who’d nearly un-spun the Web of Time just by existing, until her existence became the thread that tied it back together. The universe had given her one hell of a reprieve. Keeping him safe was just the same as working with UNIT had been: her way of paying it back.

Which only made what she knew she had to say all the harder. “If you really don’t want me along, I’ll stay. I’ll carry on as I have been, doing my bit to protect the Earth. I don’t mind, truly. Just…if I do stay, promise me one thing. Take care of yourself, as well as the universe. She still needs you, you know.”

For a long moment, he didn’t speak. Then, “I almost lost you back there,” the Doctor said quietly. “Twice. And while you were lying there on the floor, unconscious, maybe dying, I remembered something. Something that didn’t fit. You and me in the TARDIS, talking about where to go next: Mafeking, Londinium, the Jovian Fold…”

Charley swallowed hard, blinking back tears. “You remember.”

He smiled at her, and for the first time it felt entirely genuine. “Some things are too good to be forgotten.” The Doctor turned away, but only long enough to open the TARDIS door. “So?”

She hardly dared to hope. “You mean…?”

“I still owe you a thousand year carnival. And seeing as it is a thousand years, I don’t think it’ll much matter if we’re off by a few months.” He grinned and held out a hand. “Well? You coming or not?”

Her past held loosely in one hand, Charley reached out and took hold of her future with the other. “Always.”
