Fic: Ships in the Night part 5/17 (QL, Sam/Donna)

The Limo pulled up at the curb and she stepped out, glancing back with a smile at her fiancee, Allan Gardener.

“I’ll meet you inside,” he promised.

“All right.”

Around her, flashbulbs flared, cameras clicked, and voices were raised in cheers and questions. One reporter’s voice caught her attention.

“And now here’s the lady we’ve all been waiting for, the star of ‘Crosswinds,’ Miss Ferne Marshall!”

The television camera beside the reporter swung in her direction and she gave it a dazzling smile. The reporter edged his way through the melee to her side. “Miss Marshall, do you have anything you want to tell us about this film?”

Putting on the face she always wore for the cameras, Ferne smiled again and steeled herself for the barrage of questions that was sure to come.

“Well, as you know, the film is about…”

She never finished her sentence. There was a gunshot and she felt a sudden pain rip through her shoulder. Suddenly, the crowd erupted into a chorus of high pitched screams. She felt someone grab her arm and pull her down. Another gunshot rang out, and she could hear security shouting above her head. She turned her head and her eyes met those of a young, dark-haired man lying beside her.

“Are you all right?” he asked urgently.

She nodded weakly. Consciousness began to slip away from her, but she heard the man shouting, “Somebody give me something to stop the bleeding. I’m a paramedic!”

Ferne sat up with a gasp. Ever since she had awakened in this strange room after the assassination attempt, she had been reliving the incident every time she fell asleep. The terror and confusion of the event still clung to her and she began to cry softly. A man of about forty-five or so with a sincere face and a startling shock of white in the front of his hair, dressed in the same kind of white garment she had been surprised to find herself in, was sitting in a plain chair not far from her bed. He looked up, startled.

“Are you all right, ma’am?”

She nodded uncertainly. “As well as can be expected, I guess.”

Her companion breathed a sigh of relief. “That’s good. At first I thought you were in a coma or something, but the Admiral said you were just sleeping.” He smiled. “You’re a pretty sound sleeper, ma’am. I’m trained to know the difference between asleep and unconscious and I couldn’t even tell.”

Ferne smiled back and brushed her hair away from her face with one hand. “The Admiral?”

“Admiral Albert Calavicci, short Italian guy, came in and asked me a bunch of questions about myself.” He shook his head, amused. “They didn’t give you the third degree?”

“Well, someone did come in and ask me questions, but it was a nurse named Beth. I assumed they were trying to make sure my memory hadn’t been affected.”

“Do you know where we are?”

“I assume it’s a hospital.”

He smiled. “Funny, I kinda thought it was some sort of top secret military installation.”

Ferne tried to smile through the wave of dizziness that came over her. Her unfamiliar companion looked startled.

“Are you sure you’re all right?”

She nodded. “I think maybe I should lie back down…”

He reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder to steady her. Suddenly, the face before her changed. She gasped and the young man who had saved her life pulled back as if a similar change had come over her. For the irst time he seemed to recognize her.

“Miss Marshall!” he exclaimed, startled.

“You…you’re the man who saved my life!”

He nodded, his face ashen and bewildered. “I’m sorry, but up until a second ago, I swear you looked like someone else!”

“So did you!”

Jack’s face reflected her own confusion. “What’s going on?”

“I don’t know, I don’t understand either. I think your theory of where we are may be the correct one though…” She glanced around the sealed, sterile room. “This reminds me of the spaceship set from one of my early films.”

“It does look kind of like one, doesn’t it?”

Their eyes met, a mutual suspicion hovering between them.

“Well, wherever this place is, I get the feeling information is not going to be volunteered.”

Jack’s eyes scanned the room. “I’m with you on that one.”

“We haven’t been formally introduced, have we?” she changed the subject.

“No, I guess not.” He held out one hand to her, hesitantly. “My name’s Jack Kemp, Miss Marshall.”

“Pleased to meet you, and please call me Ferne.”

“Oh, no I couldn’t…”

“Please,” she repeated. “We may be here together for a while so I’d rather be on a first name basis.” She took his hand and shook it firmly.

“All right…Ferne.”

Fic: Ships in the Night part 4/17 (QL, Sam/Donna)

“Donna.”

Donna’s eyes flew open at the sound of her own name. Standing beside her bed was a pretty, middle-aged woman with shoulder-length brown hair and kind eyes wearing an emerald green blouse and black skirt.

“How did you know..?” she began.

The woman smiled. “We’ve been friends for a long time. I certainly hope I know your name.”

Donna frowned, trying to call up a picture of this woman in her mind, but everything except her own name still escaped her. “I’m sorry, I…”

“I know you don’t remember me, but that’s all right. I’m Beth.”

“Pleased to meet you…again. I guess they told you I’ve got amnesia, huh?”

Beth smiled. “Well, no, not exactly. In fact, that diagnosis wouldn’t be completely accurate. What you’ve got is what we call a swiss-cheesed memory.”

Donna smiled at the accuracy of the term. “It’s a typical symptom of what you’ve been through,” her companion continued.

“You mean being shot or whatever?”

Beth laughed. “No. In case you haven’t already figured it out, you’re not the one who was shot. You’re not Ferne Marshall.”

“I’m glad somebody finally noticed. What am I, some sort of Secret Agent surgically altered to look like her in order to catch the gunman?”

“Well, something like that, although I’m afraid it’s a bit more complicated.”

“More complicated? Oh, boy!”

Beth smiled at Donna’s subconscious usage of Sam’s favorite expression.

“You’re right about one thing, it is secret. So secret that I can’t even fill you in on all the details you’ve forgotten. Only what you need to do what you’re here for.”

Donna nodded curiously.

“Your name is Donna Alessi, and you’re one of the top administrative and research associates on Project Quantum Leap. The reason you can’t remember much is the same reason you see Ferne Marshall’s face when you look in the mirror. You’ve traveled twenty-two years back in time.”

Incredible as it was, the story rang a faint bell in Donna’s mind. Without any further explanation she was able to connect the two seemingly unrelated mysteries.

“Yes, I remember…sort of. But then how did you…how can you…?”

Beth held out one hand towards her. “Take my hand.”

Donna reached for the outstretched hand and her fingers passed right through it. She stared open-mouthed at the ghostly visitor.

“I’m a neurological hologram, projected from your own time to help you. Because of this, I can only be seen and heard by you.”

“You’re just a hologram? But I thought you said we had been friends for a long time?”

“I’m a hologram to you, but where I am, which is what we call the Imaging Chamber, you and everything else here is a hologram to me.”

Once again the bizarre explanation made perfect sense and small bits of memory were coming back to fill in the details.

“So, if no one else can see you, I guess I’d better not talk to you when there’s anyone else around.”

“That’s a good policy, although sometimes we’ll have to talk in the prescence of others. I’d suggest just trying to phrase what you say to me in a way that they’ll think it’s directed at them.”

Donna nodded. “Did I volunteer to do this?”

Beth smiled sadly. “Yes you did.”

“Why?”

The hologram hesitated. “I’m afraid I can’t tell you. One of the rules we operate under is that we can never tell you anything about yourself that you don’t remember.”

The woman in the bed stared at her in disbelief. “But you don’t understand how important this is!”

“Yes I do, Donna. Believe me, I understand better than anyone, but I can’t tell you.”

“Will I ever remember?”

“I don’t know, Donna. I hope so.”

“How long will I be here, anyway?”

“Until you do what has to be done here. In the original history, there was a second attempt on Ferne Marshall’s life, and that one was successful. Ziggy says there’s and eighty-four percent chance you’re here to find the killer and stop him.”

“But wait a minute…what happens if I don’t succeed?”

“Then you won’t Leap.”

“And I’ll be the one who ends up being killed…”

Beth smiled ironically. “I’m afraid so.”

Donna sighed and shook her head. “I never realized time travel was such a dangerous pastime!” There was a heavy pause, then she spoke again hesitantly. “Beth…who’s Ziggy?”

Fic: Ships in the Night part 3/17 (QL, Sam/Donna)

“Would you rather I have forced her to stay here, gradually losing her hope?”

Al shook his head impatiently, trying to remain unmoved by Beth’s logic.

“No, but I didn’t particularly want to have two of them to look for either!”

“That’s what I’m here for,” Beth replied calmly.

“But what about the girls?”

“I consulted the girls about it before Lisa and Trudi left and they agreed with me. Ruth even offered to watch Samantha when we both have to be here.”

“But…”

Beth placed a restraining hand on her husband’s arm. “I know what I’m doing, Al. I would have done anything to go over to ‘Nam and look for you when you were there.”

Al opened his mouth as if to object, and Beth smiled sadly.

“In this timeline at least,” she amended.

The Admiral stared at the cigar in his hand, frustrated. “I guess I feel like she gave up. Like she decided I couldn’t find him, that I’d failed…”

Beth took Al’s chin firmly in one hand and looked him straight in the eyes. “You haven’t failed anyone, Al. You’ve done everything humanly possible–maybe more–to find Sam. Maybe this is the only way *to* find him.”

“Well, then it should be me! I promised I’d bring him home..!”

“Do you think I’d let you out of my sight if I thought you were going to do that?” Beth scolded. “I need you here, Al. We need you here. Sam needs you here.”

There was an awkward pause. “No one else can contact Sam, Al,” she reminded him. “He needs you here.”

Suddenly, Gooshie’s voice came over the intercom, filled with excitement. “Admiral Calavicci! There’s someone in the Waiting Room!”

“Yeah, I know, Gooshie. You a big Ferne Marshall fan or something?”

“No, no! I mean someone ELSE!”

Al looked at Beth, startled. “She can’t have Leaped again already! You haven’t even spoken to her yet, how would she know what to do?”

“Admiral, you don’t understand!” Gooshie insisted. “It’s DOCTOR BECKETT!”

There was a brief, stunned silence. “Wouldn’t that be just like him to come home right after she Leaps out to hunt for him?” Al muttered.

“Is he sure it’s Sam?” Beth asked.

“Gooshie, are you sure?”

This time Ziggy’s voice answered him. “There is a 50% probability that this is Doctor Beckett. Nevertheless, it is equally possibly someone he has Leaped into. You will be able to see for certain, will you not?”

Al nodded. His neural link to Sam enabled him to see the visitors in the Waiting Room as they really were, instead of with Sam’s face. “We’ll be right there.”

*****

It was the face of a stranger. To Al, the face of the young man in the Waiting Room was as unfamiliar as the many other faces that had come through there since Sam’s first Leap. Even though Beth couldn’t see it, she knew by the expression on her husband’s face that his best friend had not returned. Silently she took Al’s hand to reassure him.

“Well,” he commented. “At least we’ll know where he is now.”

“I’m sorry I did not inform you earlier, Admiral. However, I thought you would prefer to see for yourself,” the computer interceded.

Al nodded. “Yeah, Ziggy.”

Beth frowned. “You knew it wasn’t him, Ziggy?”

“Of course. Since the neural link that enables your husband to see Doctor Beckett as himself is established through me, doesn’t it make sense that my visual sensors would have the same capability? I also see Ferne Marshall in Dr. Elise’s place, as you do.”

Beth nodded.

“Do you think we should put him in another room?” She indicated the man wearing Sam’s face.

Al shook his head. “Nah, let ’em get acquainted. They probably won’t remember a thing about it afterwards anyway.”

“How can we thank you enough?” Jenny smiled and kissed Sam on the cheek. “You’ve been like a guardian angel too us. I don’t know how we would have made it without you.”

Warren squeezed her hand and reached his other hand out to Sam. “I tell you I’d get more in the habit of pickin’ up hitchikers if they were all like you, Sam. Sure you don’t want anything?”

Sam smiled and shook Warren’s offered hand. “I’m sure. It was my pleasure.”

“Well, you be careful out there. The road can be a dangerous place, you know.”

“I know.”

Jenny leaned her head on Warren’s shoulder. Her face was more content than it had ever been in the brief time he had known them. Her hand that was not in Warren’s rested on the shoulder of their young son, Barry. Sam realized with a pang that he missed being part of that picture. Even though Leaping as himself had many advantages, he was always alone. Even Al had not been able to find him, apparently. He was always a stranger, wandering into the lives of other people, hoping to help them set right a few of the things that had gone wrong in their lives. He missed becoming instantly part of a family, not having to earn trust because it was given to him, many times, along with the face he wore. He could feel the Leap coming on, and briefly he wished that maybe at least once more he could have that experience, confusing as it was, of being in the middle of something.

“Well, I’ve got to get going.”

Warren nodded. “Thanks for everything, man.”

Sam smiled and turned to walk away. Before he was out of their sight he felt the Leap overtake him, but he didn’t mind. It had happened before, and he figured the people just assumed that he was their guardian angel. Maybe he was.

Blue electricity and time finally overcame him and he Leaped…

Into the middle of a melee of sound and microphones.

“How does it feel to have saved the life of someone as famous as Ferne Marshall?” a voice called above the din.

“Do you know if you will be allowed to see Miss Marshall when she recovers?”

“Mr. Kemp, are you a fan of Ferne Marshall’s films?”

“Uh…no comment,” he stammered. Someone took him by the arm and began to part the sea of people before him. Bewildered, Sam trustingly followed the unknown Moses. Behind him, the torrent of voices and flashbulbs persisted.

“Mr Kemp..!”

“Mr Kemp..!”

“Mr Kemp..!”

“Oh, boy!” he whispered.

Fic: Ships in the Night part 1/17 (QL, Sam/Donna)

She awoke slowly, feeling the new energy of a new day gradually fill every part of her body. From her back she rolled to her side, wrapping her arms around the pillow and squeezing her eyes shut tighter to block out the sunlight that was seeping through her closed lids. For a few moments, she allowed herself to revel in the peace and comfort that enveloped her. It was an unfamiliar sensation, though she didn’t know why.

Suddenly, all relaxation was swept away by an overwhelming feeling of urgency.

What am I doing? I can’t sleep! I have to find him!

Her eyes flew open and she sat up quickly in bed, startled to find herself in unfamiliar surroundings. She was in a sterile white hospital room that had been turned into a garden. A tall vase of dark red roses sat on a small table beside her. The dresser across from the foot of the bed was hidden beneath a jungle of carnations, lilies, orchids, roses, ferns–an extraordinary number of ferns–and baby’s breath. The window was blocked by a similar plethora of plant life.

I have to find… As her consciousness returned fully, the last vestige of that knowledge seemed to evaporate. Her breath caught in her throat and her heart leaped with panic. She had to remember! It was vital that she know…

No! Please, I have to remember!

Tears formed unbidden in her eyes as she searched her mind desperately for this essential piece of knowledge. There was nothing.

I must remember something…my name..what is my name?!

Suddenly the door of the room opened. A young man with glasses and a prematurely receding hairline stepped into view and pulled the door shut again behind him. His face brightened upon seeing that she was awake.

“Well! It’s good to have you back in the land of the living again!”

The woman in the bed leaned back on the pillow, confused.

“How…how long have I been out?” she asked, dazed.

“You have been unconscious for almost a week, Miss Marshall.”

Miss Marshall? Somehow the name didn’t sound right.

“Well…what happened?”

“I’m afraid somebody tried to kill you. Y’know, that’s why I never want to be famous. Having fans can be dangerous business these days.”

Famous? Fans?

“I’m not surprised you don’t remember,” he continued. “I wouldn’t want to remember something like that either, especially at the premiere…”

She was getting more confused by the moment. “Are you sure you don’t have me mixed up with somebody else?”

The doctor laughed. “I doubt it would be very easy to get Ferne Marshall mixed up with anyone else. Your face is all over Hollywood since your latest film came out.”

Ferne Marshall? Well, that explained the abundance of ferns in the room.

She shook her head wearily. “I suppose it’s just me then. I’m sorry, but I don’t remember any of that.”

That attracted his attention. “What do you remember?”

“Nothing,” she replied helplessly.

Her companion’s face furrowed with concern. “We didn’t expect any amnesia…I’ll have to recheck your chart.”

My name is Donna! A sharp intake of breath accompanied this sudden realization.

“Are you all right, Miss Marshall?”

“I’m not…” she began, then stopped. Just play along, some instinct told her.

“You’re not what? You’re not all right?”

“I’m not…um…I’m not…feeling very well.”

“I would expect not. Gunshots tend to make you feel pretty awful for a while.”

Donna stared. “I was SHOT?”

He nodded, a shock of unruly brown hair bobbing up and down at the back of his head. She chuckled, causing him to look up curiously.

“I was just thinking that I must look pretty awful,” she explained, smiling at the rebellious lock of hair.

“No, actually you look pretty great. Especially for having been unconscious for a week. Here.” He gave her a small hand mirror that had been lying on the table beside the roses on the bedside table.

Thick auburn hair surrounded the face that stared back at her with pale green eyes. Though the face was beautiful, a scream fought to escape from Donna’s throat. That’s not me!!

The doctor took one look at Donna’s white face and came running to her bedside.

“Is something wrong, Miss Marshall?”

She shook her head slowly. “I think…I think I need to rest..” she said weakly, her voice faint.

“Yeah, sure. I’ll come back later.”

Donna nodded and the doctor turned to leave.

“Doctor…” He turned back to face her and she held the mirror towards him. “Would you please take this with you?”

Fic: Donna’s Song (QL, Sam/Donna)

Author’s Note: It’s ironic that I didn’t start writing Quantum Leap fanfic until after the series finale. But then again, how many series finales have screamed for resolution quite as much as that one did? I wrote the poem first, and then wrote the story around it. I was a lot younger than the characters at the time and, well, it shows. But I still like the concept of the story–and the series–so I’m sharing it anyway.

How can I watch you walk away again?
Just as before
I will never know
If you will ever return–
Can ever return…
But I know you.

*****

It was one of those times when the tears just wouldn’t stop coming. They fell on her hands, softening the ruggedness of work and worry that had become part of them over the past five years. They fell on the handlink, glistening like smooth-cut diamonds against the fluorescent cubes. She lifted one damp hand, careworn to the point of fragility, to touch the larger shape of Ziggy’s CPU.

“Run sequence,” she whispered.

In the Imaging Chamber, Admiral Al Calavicci poked tersely at his own handlink as the plethora of images swirled around him. Inside the spinning holographic column, his face could be seen, lined and shadowed with desperation, his haunted eyes searching…

Despair hung more heavily than ever over the small assembly. Gooshie stood across from Donna at the CPU, his hands hanging limply at his sides instead of hovering hopefully over the console. Verbena, for once, did not notice Donna’s tears. She stood alone, wrapped in a shell she would have tried to pierce for anyone else. Al’s wife, Beth, balanced on the edge of her chair, her eyes fixed grimly and intently on the Imaging Chamber door while her husband still stood unmoving in the eye of the hurricane of pictures. Even bubbly Tina, who usually tried to distract Gooshie by flirting with him, was somber, slowly twisting the engagement ring he had given her.

How different it had all been last week! Then hope had surged with Ziggy’s announcement that history was still changing. Somehow, a small family in Kansas had been spared a suicide that originally devastated them. For one brief moment, a balloon of hope had floated within reach of the downward wending road and the small team had seized it. Below them though, the road had continued to descend, so when the balloon burst because they were too late to intercept Sam in Kansas, the fall was devastating.

Hours passed in silence broken only by Ziggy’s steady hum. Finally, at a nod from Donna, Gooshie raised his hand to the bright console and stopped the whirlwind. As always, within seconds Al’s voice came over the intercom from the Imaging Chamber.

“GOOSHIE!”

The little programmer jumped, and looked towards Donna for help.

“It’s after midnight, Al,” she told him with forced calm.

“I can find him, just give me a little more time, please!” The Admiral’s voice was pleading.

Donna bit her lip, trying to stem the flow of tears. What if he was right? What if they were close to finding him and giving up now would lose that chance?

Beth stood, and her eyes met Donna’s weakening resolve with a silent reminder. Dr. Alessi nodded.

“Ziggy, record the time sequence covered today and be ready to start again tomorrow morning.”

“Yes, Doctor,” the computer replied calmly.

The Imaging Chamber door slid open and Al appeared in the opening, his face bleak and his bright red suit rumpled. He cast Donna a fierce glare that softened into a sad smile at the sight of her red-streaked face. Beth touched him gently on the arm and he glanced up at her with that same puzzling ironic look that his face always wore every time he saw her after coming out of the Imaging Chamber.

“Miss me?” he commented gruffly.

“Of course. I always do.”

She kissed him lightly on the cheek and smiled knowingly. “I love you, Al.”

“I love you too, Beth.”

Ever since Al had fainted at the sight of Beth waiting for him at the Imaging Chamber door on the day Sam disappeared, this brief conversation had become a sort of daily ritual for the Calaviccis. For the first time in their more than thirty-five year marriage, Al seemed to need almost constant reassurance of Beth’s continued presence and affection. Donna wondered what had happened between them and how it was connected to Sam’s last Leap. She was tempted to ask Ziggy, but somehow she knew that this was a private matter between Al and Beth. They would tell her if she needed to know.

Beth took her husband’s hand and squeezed it. “Let’s go home. Remember, Lisa and Trudi go back to school tomorrow morning.”

Al’s face brightened at the name of his two oldest daughters. “I guess I owe them some time then, eh?”

“I’m sure they would appreciate it.”

Al sighed and put his arm around his wife. “OK, let’s go.” He glanced towards the console. “I’ll be back bright and early.”

Donna shook her head. “If you plan to stay up all night with your girls, you should probably stay home and get some sleep.”

The Admiral started to protest. “But I’m the only one who can…”

“She’s right,” Beth interrupted him calmly. “You’ve been wearing yourself out, Al. Please get some rest before it kills you.”

“In fact,” Donna resumed speaking hesitantly. “I’ve been thinking for a while, and I think we all need a day off.”

“If we take a day off, we may miss him!” Al objected sharply.

“We’ve been vigilant ever since he disappeared and we still missed him,” Donna reminded him. There was an awkward silence. Much as they might have wished to, none of them could dispute that statement.

“Look at us,” she continued. “Do you really think we’re going to do Sam much good like this?”

No one answered.

“I want to find Sam more than any of you possibly can, you know that! But what if we did find him, and were too worn out to do anything about it?” She turned to Al. “How are we going to get in touch with Sam if you give yourself a heart attack by overworking yourself to the point of exhaustion?”

Al nodded grudgingly and Beth led him out of the room, exchanging one last nod with Donna. The rest of the staff slowly drifted out, Verbena by herself, Gooshie and Tina hand in hand. Only Donna remained behind.

“Is it ready, Ziggy?” she asked quietly as soon as everyone had left.

“Yes, Doctor Alessi,” the computer answered. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

“Yes,” was the whispered reply. “I can’t wait any longer. I miss him too much.”

“They just called Trudi’s flight,” Samantha announced.

Trudi laughed and rumpled her younger sister’s hair. “I know, Sam. I can hear just as well as you.” She picked up her carry-on bag.

“Now remember to get some sleep on the plane,” Al cautioned his daughter.

Trudi’s merry eyes sparkled. “Look who’s talking, Dad.”

“Oh, he’s going to sleep as soon as we get home,” Beth assured them, smiling.

Lisa laughed and hugged her younger sister. “You were smart, taking a plane. I hope I don’t fall asleep at the wheel.”

“You’d better not!” Al warned.

The Admiral’s oldest daughter grinned. “Don’t worry, Dad. Stephanie’s driving first since she got plenty of sleep.”

“Well, I’d better go,” Trudi reminded them. Hugs were exchanged all around. “Hey, Ruthie, you gonna come visit me?”

Ruth, a senior in high school nodded. “Of course. I have to decide if I want to go there with you, don’t I?”

Trudi grinned and turned to board the plane, blowing a kiss behind her. Samantha raced to the window and gazed out of it, her eyes fixed on the plane. As soon as the gate closed behind the last boarding passengers, the rest of the family joined her.

If Trudi were looking for them out her window, they would have been easy to spot. Al and Beth were standing behind the girls with their arms around each other. She had her head on his shoulder and her dark hair stood out against his silver flight jacket. She was wearing a simple blue dress, almost the same shade as her husband’s tie, but lacking the metallic sheen. In front of their parents, the other three girls were alternately sitting or kneeling on the wide window ledge, waving vaguely at the plane in hopes of being seen by their sister. Like Trudi, Lisa and Ruth favored their mother, although Trudi alone had inherited their father’s naturally curly hair. Samantha though, was purely her father’s daughter, from her face, which mirrored his, to the brightly colored vest she was wearing with a green blouse and her favorite floral jeans.

They stood there at the window, like a family portrait with one face missing, until the plane had taken off and disappeared into the clear blue desert sky.

*****

Al didn’t fall asleep until almost noon, even though Ruth and Samantha’s awareness fled the moment they hit their beds. Beth remained awake, gazing pensively at the ceiling of the master bedroom.

Her mind had leaped backwards in time to a night in San Diego in 1969. Their song, hers and Al’s, had been playing in the background, and she was dancing. Although Al was far away, if not dead, she seemed to sense his prescence. With her eyes tightly closed she could almost feel his hands in hers, then he seemed to kiss her…and she heard him say goodbye. When she opened her eyes again to his absence, all her hope had dissipated. For the first time, she believed that he was dead. She believed it as fervently as if his spirit had been with her, and had told her, even though she heard his voice ringing in her mind, asking her to wait. For one awful moment, she was certain he was never coming back. Then, unbelievably, she had heard a sound, and turned to see a man standing behind her. He was a stranger, dressed in a short-sleeved white shirt and long brown slacks, but for some reason she trusted him. Maybe because he said he was a friend of Al’s. He sat her down, and told her: “Al’s alive. And he’s coming home to you.” Tears had streamed down her face, clouding her vision, but not enough to keep her from seeing the stranger disappear in a blaze of blue light. She thought he was an angel…and she had believed. From that day on, every day of waiting had been bearable, because she knew…

Donna’s face floated in her mind. Beautiful dark wavy hair pulled hastily back from a careworn face, whose beauty still shone through the shadows and lines. Eyes that had so captivated the young physicist on Project Star Bright were haunted with an indescribable depth of sorrow. She was so different from what she had been fifteen years ago, the night Al had introduced Sam and Donna to Beth when he brought them home for dinner for the first time. That night she had recognized him, and after hearing his dream of traveling through time, had known he was her angel. That night she had formed a special friendship with the beautiful young woman, somehow knowing Donna would someday have to face the familiar agony of being cut off from the man she loved.

Sighing, she rolled over on her side to face her husband. For the first time in weeks his face was peaceful. No, she wouldn’t tell him. He would try to stop them, but more importantly, it would rob him of that brief peace. She could hear as clearly as if they had been spoken the words he would say if she told him what she was going to do.

“I have to help her, Al,” she whispered in explanation to the sleeping figure. “Sam stopped me from giving up hope on you, can I do any less for his wife? I know what she’s going through better than anyone else on the Project. I know why she has to do this…and I have to help her.”

She kissed him softly on the cheek and quietly slipped out of bed. It took only a moment to shed her nightgown and replace it with the dress she had been wearing earlier. Downstairs in the living room she lightly tapped the fluorescent, multi-cubed wrist band that each member of the Project wore as an audio link to Ziggy when not using a handlink.

“Ziggy,” she whispered.

The computer’s melodious voice filled the room as if she were present. “Yes, Nurse Calavicci?”

Beth smiled. She remembered how long it had taken her to persuade Ziggy not to address her by her Naval rank.

“Is she ready?”

“Doctor Alessi is ready and awaiting your arrival.”

“Good. Tell her I’ll be right there.”

*****

Your devotion is total.
The debt you owe,
Though never claimed,
Will be repaid.

The life that held you
For so long,
But never touched you,
Will be preserved,
And only that half-fallen friend
Will remain to comfort me
When you have gone.

*****

“Where are you, Al?”

“I’m right here, Sam. I’ll always be here when you need me.”

Sam shook his head. He looked straight at his friend, but somehow, his eyes saw nothing, just as most people he helped in his Leaps could never see the hologram.

“No, Al. You’re lying to me. I don’t know why, but you’re lying to me. You haven’t been here. Where did you go after that last Leap? Why didn’t you find me?”

He grabbed Sam’s shoulders and tried to shake him, but as always, his hands met no resistance, and this time Sam didn’t even know he tried.

“I tried. Damn it, Sam, I tried to find you! I’m still trying!”

“I can’t do it without you, Al.”

“Sam, I’m trying…”

“I just want to come home.”

“I’m trying to bring you home, Sam.”

“Don’t give up on me, Al.”

“I won’t. I promise I won’t. Hang on, Sam. I’ll find you, I promise!”

“I won’t fail you, Sam!”

Al sat up in bed, awakened by the sound of his own voice. He was trembling uncontrollably. Regret and failure grasped him firmly and shook him the way he had tried to shake Sam in the dream.

“I won’t fail you!” he repeated emphatically.

But I have, I have failed. I’m sorry, Sam. I’m so sorry…

He reached one hand towards Beth’s side of the bed, searching for some sort of comfort. She was gone.

“Beth…”

Had it all been a dream then? Had he just imagined that Sam had given her back to him, possibly sacrificing his only way home to do so? The arctic hand of fear wrapped itself around his heart. Please, no. Please don’t let it be…

There was a loud rap on the door.

“Dad!” Samantha’s voice called. “We’re gonna play Monopoly. Wanna play?”

Relief swept over him, melting away his fears. Beth was still his. His girls were still here. They had apparently just gotten up before him.

“Yeah, I’d love to play. Just let me get my robe on.” He swung his feet over the edge of the bed, glancing at the clock as he did so. 1:06 PM. Strange that he could feel so refreshed after one hour of sleep, and after such a dream.

The door flew open and Samantha burst into the room. “Hurry up, Dad!”

He chuckled. “I’m hurrying, I’m hurrying. Where’s your mom?”

“Over at the Project.”

Al turned to his daughter, startled. “What’s she doing there?”

“Helping Aunt Donna.”

“With what?”

Samantha shrugged. “I dunno.”

“I thought Donna had ordered everyone to take the day off.”

His youngest daughter merely shrugged again. “C’mon, Dad. Ruthie always cheats when you don’t play.”

“I do not!” Ruth’s voice called indignantly from downstairs.

Al laughed and patted his daughter lightly on the back. “I’ll be down in a minute, ok sweetie?”

She grinned, her face dimpling, and bounced out of the room.

Al closed the door behind her.

“Ziggy!”

“Yes, Admiral?” the computer responded calmly.

“Is Beth there?”

“Yes, Admiral, your wife is here.”

“And Donna?”

“Doctor Alessi is also present.”

“Where is Beth?”

“In the Control Room. She has just left the Imaging Chamber.”

Al’s eyes narrowed. “Where is Donna?”

“In the Accelerator Chamber.”

The Observer inhaled sharply. “WHAT?!”

“Doctor Alessi is in the Accelerator Chamber,” Ziggy repeated calmly. “If my audio transmitters are not functioning properly, I can increase the volume.”

“No, Ziggy! Donna…she’s not going to…”

“Yes, Admiral. I believe that is her intention.”

“Well, stop her!”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that, Admiral.”

“Stall her then!”

“May I ask why?”

The Admiral was already hurriedly getting dressed.

“Because if I get there in time, I’M going to stop her!” He paused and glanced at the wedding picture of Sam and Donna that Sam had given him. They were looking at each other, their eyes filled with the kind of love that would make someone do anything for that other person. Suddenly, he knew what Donna was doing.

“Or at least try to.”

*****

But even though my memory will fade,
And other loves will fill
The void I leave behind,
If time permits,
You will strive to fulfill
That forgotten promise–
The promise you gave me
When you held me for the last time–
That you will return to me.

*****

Donna stood in the Accelerator Chamber, her figure strangely mummy-like in the dwarfing white fermisuit. She smiled at Beth, whose holographic image had been projected by Ziggy from the Imaging Chamber to test the neural link.

You promised, Sam. You promised me you’d be back!

“Can you hear me all right?”

Beth nodded. “Clear as a bell on this end. Does this guarantee it will work across time as well, though?”

“Distance and time don’t affect it, or Al would have more trouble finding Sam the farther back he went. As long as we’re both mentally stable, it should function regardless of where or when we are.”

Where are you, Sam? When are you? Why can’t we find you?

Beth reached out a hand to Donna, but the two hands passed right through each other. Donna laughed uneasily. “I forgot about this part.”

“Are you sure you want to do this?”

How can I not? Oh, Sam, why won’t you come home to me?

Donna nodded. “I have to find him, Beth. I can’t go any longer, not knowing.”

Beth indicated her agreement. “I know. When Al was a POW I would have given my right arm to be able to go over there and look for him.”

I’ll find you, Sam. I have to. Oh, please, Love, let me find you.

The two women smiled sadly at each other.

Donna took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I’m ready.”

Beth nodded, and the Imaging Chamber door appeared behind her. “Good luck,” she whispered, and stepped through the opening into the bright light of the Control Room. The door slid closed, and any trace of the link vanished for the time being.

In the Control Room, Beth lifted her hand to the console. “Ready, Ziggy.”

Slowly the silvery walls of the Accelerator began to gleam with a pale blue light. Something resembling steam swam up from the circle beneath Donna’s feet, circling around her and blowing her loose hair into a brown whirlwind above her head. The air below her pressed upwards against her outstretched arms, as if trying to lift her off the ground. And indescribable energy began to surge through her body.

Donna lifted her eyes to the ceiling of the Chamber. Already she could feel herself being pulled away, and she could almost see her destination. A thrill of hope ran through her, energizing her even more. She closed her eyes as if in prayer.

I’m coming, Sam, she promised silently…

And Leaped.

*****

I know
That even if your mind forgets me,
Your heart will ever sense mine
And your soul will never release me.

I know
You will always love me
As I love you,
Because I know you.

Fic: For Every Action (QL, Al/Beth)

Author’s Note: This was the very first full Quantum Leap story I ever wrote and one of the first fanfic stories I published online. Whether it stands the test of time or not, well, I leave that up to you.

“He’s Leaped!”

Al turned to Gooshie, startled. “What?”

“He’s Leaped!” the little programmer repeated, his voice rising with panic. “Admiral, we’ve lost him!”

Al muttered a curse under his breath. “Reset the search parameters and start it up again!” he howled, striding quickly towards the Imaging Chamber, bracing himself against the dizziness the operation was sure to bring on.

Gooshie nodded and his hands began to fly over Ziggy’s CPU.

Al punched at the handlink, his face pale. The Imaging Chamber door slid open with a sarcastic hiss, as if taunting him with his friend’s disappearance.

“What is going on?” he grumbled to himself. “Sam, how on earth did you know what to do to Leap out? I hadn’t even figured it out yet!”

He strode to the center of the room, trying not to react to its emptiness. Always before when he had entered the Imaging Chamber, another world awaited him–Sam’s world for the moment. He had never been able to touch that world, but at least it had been there. The bare walls stared at him, and their metallic gleam seemed to press at him from all sides.

“Ready, Ziggy,” he stated gruffly. Within moments a spinning column of pictures surrounded him, blocking out the horrible blankness of the room. Each picture and each year spun by him, too fast for his eyes to catch. Only his neural link to Sam would take hold of the right picture and hang on to it. He had succeeded in finding him before. He knew he could do it again if he just concentrated hard enough…

Me, he realized with a start. Wherever you are, Sam, it has something to do with me!

Filled with excitement he raced to the door, not trusting the intercom to safely relay this precious information. It hissed open almost eagerly, and he opened his mouth to tell Ziggy the narrowed parameters.

Someone stepped into his line of vision, her beautiful face so much like what he remembered…

He staggered.

“Beth…” he whispered.

She stared at him, her face lined with concern. His eyes scanned her quickly, hoping to once again memorize the vision of her before this hallucination faded. His eyes dropped to her hands. She was wearing a wedding band–the one he had given her.

Al felt suddenly weak. His head spun and darkness threatened to overcome him.

“Al, hon, are you all right?” Beth asked.

That final shock hit him like a bullet and knocked him into blackness.

It was her voice. That beautiful voice that had kept him alive for so many years in Vietnam was calling to him. He could feel himself beginning to come back to awareness, but he pulled back. He wanted to revel in this dream where he could still hear the way she pronounced his name with so much love. Reality was too horrible in comparison. Reality was five broken marriages, jealously wondering if Tina was cheating on him with Gooshie, and trying so hard to bring Sam home. Reality was that Sam was lost.

I’m here with you, Beth. I know this must be a dream, but I’d rather be in a dream with you than out there all by myself. They can’t compare to you, hon, those other girls. None of them ever did. I tried to find someone else, but none of them were ever you…

He had even imagined that she had been waiting for him. Waiting for him at the Imaging Chamber door. As time passed he could even vividly imagine that she had been waiting for him when he came home from ‘Nam. He could see it, right down to the way her smile lit up her face when she saw him…

“Al,” the voice called again.

He was coming out of it, despite his resistance. Strangely, her voice seemed to get louder the closer to awareness he got.

“Al.”

He opened his eyes. She was there. The face above him was thirty years older than he remembered, but it was just as beautiful. As the rest of his senses gradually returned to him, he realized that she was cradling his head in her lap, the comforting softness of her hands gently caressing his face.

“Al, are you all right?”

It was real! It was impossible, but it was real! She was there!

His own words rang in his head: (“Aw, God, Sam, I love her. Beth is the only woman I ever really loved. She’s the only one I ever wanted to grow old with. That’s why all my marriages never worked after that. Sam, if you’re lucky, life is gonna give you one shot at true love and Beth was mine.”)

But Sam had refused, insisting that wasn’t what he was there to do. Even worse, he had been right.

Suddenly, Al knew where Sam was, where he had to be.

Much to the surprise of those around him, he lurched to his feet. The handlink lay where he had dropped it when he fell–fainted was a little too embarrassing to admit to–and he snatched it up on his way to the Imaging Chamber.

“Gooshie, set the Imaging Chamber for 1969, San Diego, California! NOW!”

Startled, the little programmer began tapping at Ziggy’s console rapidly.

Al glanced over his shoulder, drinking in every inch of Beth with his eyes. If he found Sam, she might be gone again when he returned, but still he had to try.

“I love you, Beth,” he said, then disappeared as the door slid shut behind him.

“Got it!” Gooshie’s voice came excitedly over the intercom.

For one brief instant, the house he and Beth had shared in San Diego appeared around him. Beth, her lovely young face streaked with tears of joy, was sitting across from a brown-haired man in a short-sleeved white shirt and brown trousers. Al’s heart seemed to stop for a moment.

Sam turned, and Al was sure that he saw him. A smile quickly lit up the physicist’s face and he lifted a hand as if in farewell. Al started to speak.

Suddenly, electric blue light exploded outward from Sam, filling the Chamber with blinding brilliance.

“Sam, NO!” Al screamed in desperation.

It was too late. The light of the Leap faded to reveal the empty room.

“Sam…” Al’s voice, faint as it was, echoed in the hollow chamber.

He searched his mind, looking for another clue like the one that had guided him before, but there was nothing. Sam was gone, and somehow he knew there would be no one in the Waiting Room.

He didn’t hear the door slide open behind him, or the sound of Beth’s shoes as she hurried towards him. He didn’t realize he had fallen to his knees, staring blankly at the chamber wall, the handlink fallen from his hand. Then, Beth’s arms were around him and he finally allowed himself to give in to the terrible sense of loss.

As he had not done since that terrible day in the past that no longer existed, when he had found out Beth wasn’t waiting for him, Al began to cry.

End Note: I know I took some liberties with the scene of Sam and Beth in “Mirror Image”, but since the camera went to Al’s photo at that point, I figured this could have been going on in the background. At least that way, they were able to sort of say goodbye.

Fic: Without You (Profiler, Sam/Bailey)

Author’s Note: Inspired by spoilers for S4 of the show but written before it actually aired. Oh and, um, I was in college when this was written. I was barely out of my teens. I make no excuses for the sappy songfic other than that. 😉

It was the same counter at the same bar where Sam had first laid out before him the rules under which she would come out of retirement. Rules she herself would break within days. To take back her life…or so they’d all thought.

Bailey sighed deeply and cast a sideways glance towards his friend, who was studiously ignoring him in favor of her as-yet-untouched margarita. The past few weeks had been hellish for all of them; he would never forget waking up in the hospital to learn that Sam had disappeared, or that the arch-nemesis they’d all thought was safely on death row had instead been playing them all like marionettes for over a year…his chest tightened with anger and remembered pain. Damn him. Damn that bastard, Jack. If it weren’t for him…

“Are you sure about this, Sam?” Bailey asked, his voice low and subdued.

She nodded with a weak smile, lifting her topaz-blue eyes to his. “I tried, Bailey. For three years I tried, for your sake. But every time I thought it was finally over…”

Sam shuddered, her mind turning through a whirlpool of hated images that refused to go away. I almost lost you this time, Bailey. I can’t go through that again. “Chloe and I…we can’t keep living like that. And I can’t expect either of us to try any longer.”

“I don’t expect you to either,” Bailey conceded softly. I just wish you didn’t have to leave to have the life you want.

“I know you don’t.”

He sighed again. The curt eloquence he’d always prided himself on seemed to have died on his lips the day she announced she was leaving, deader than Dickens’ doornail. And the man who’d always known just how to get what he wanted suddenly couldn’t find the words to ask for what he wanted–no, needed–more than anything.

“Can I buy you another drink?” he finally asked after an eternal, awkward silence.

Sam laughed softly, lifting her glass. “I haven’t finished this one yet, Bailey.”

He smiled sheepishly, dropping his eyes to his own drink, his third Scotch of the evening. A movement caught his eye and he turned to watch as two teenagers fell against the jukebox, necking. The girl was fumbling behind her with one hand to make a selection, but couldn’t make the effort to break the kiss.

He shook his head with a rueful smile. Kids always thought they knew everything about life…and love. More fool they.

Then again, maybe these two did know something, he corrected himself with a touch of surprise as he recognized the opening strains of the song the girl had selected. Normally he wasn’t a fan of country music, but he’d heard this one in a movie once…

He turned back to Sam, a decision suddenly made. “Well, if I can’t get you a drink, how about a dance instead?”

She looked doubtful, so he reached out to take her hand. “Come on. One last time?” he coaxed.

With a reluctant smile, she conceded, allowing him to lead her to the dance floor and pull her into his arms. She drew back only a little, startled, as she too recognized the song.

“Bailey–”

“Shh, Sam,” he scolded with an unexpected tenderness in his voice. “Just listen.”

How do I
Get through the night without you?
If I had to live without you
What kind of life would that be?

Oh, I
I need you in my arms, need you to hold
You’re my world, my heart, my soul
If you ever leave

Baby, you would take away everything
Good in my life
And tell me

Sam bit her lip to hold back tears, overwhelmed by the message her best friend was clearly sending. Oh, Bailey, don’t you see, that’s why I have to leave? Because I couldn’t…

How do I live without you?
I want to know

I couldn’t live if I lost you.

How do I breathe without you
If you ever go?
How do I ever, ever survive?
How do I
Oh how do I
Oh how do I live?

Beginning to cry softly, Sam let her hand slip from Bailey’s, reaching up to lace her fingers together behind his head. He pulled her close in response, pressing his face against her hair.

Without you
There’d be no sun in my sky
There would be no love in my life
There’d be no one left for me

“Janet?” Sam whispered.

Bailey pulled back a little to look at her, a sad smile coming over his features. “Janet moved out the day you told us you were leaving. She said she could see my choice in my eyes.”

Oh, I
Baby I don’t know what I would do
I’d be lost if I lost you
If you ever leave

“And she’s right, Sam,” he continued. “In the end, I could never choose anyone but you.”

Baby you would take away everything
Good in my life

“I love you.”

And tell me now
How do I live without you?
I want to know
How do I breathe without you
If you ever go?

Sam buried her face in his shoulder, now crying in earnest. “I know,” she whispered. “I know.”

How do I go on?
If you ever leave
Baby don’t you know that you’re everything
Real in my life?

So tell me how
How do I live without you?
I want to know
How do I breathe without you?
If you ever go?

“Don’t go, Sam,” Bailey whispered into her hair. “Please.”

How do I ever, ever survive?
Oh how do I
Oh how do I
Oh how do I live?

Sam pulled back, staring into the deep coffee-brown eyes that had saved her life more times than she could count.

How do I live without you?

She couldn’t just wait around for the next madman to try to close those miracle eyes that saw through to her soul. If she left, at least he would always be there, a friend from afar.

How do I live without you?

“Oh, Bailey…I love you so much. That’s why I just can’t–I just can’t wait around for the next psychopath to try to take you out of the way.”

“There won’t be a next one, I promise.”

“You don’t know that, Bailey. You can’t know that…unless you gave up the team, and I can’t ask that of you.”

“I could, Sam. For you, I could do it.”

“No. I would never want to be the cause of that.”

He shook his head, his eyes almost black with pain. “So you would rather give up on this before we even start? I wasted too much time already, Sam. I don’t want to wait until it’s too late.”

“Bailey–”

“I won’t ask you to come back to the team–God knows I should never have asked you to come out of hiding in the first place…” But I was selfish. I needed you. I still do. “But couldn’t you at least stay in Atlanta?”

Let her go, Malone. If you really love her, let her go, a voice piped up in the back of his mind. Bailey ignored it.

Sam took a long, deep, shuddering breath and buried her head in his chest again, even though the music had died. How easy it would be to just stay here forever, in the strong curve of his arms…

So why couldn’t she do the easy thing? Why this hesitation, this fear?

When she spoke, her words were as much for herself as for him. “I don’t know, Bailey. I just don’t know.”

Fic: Want (Profiler, Sam/Bailey)

Author’s Note: This was written based on spoilers for “Otis, California,” before the episode actually aired.

I wanted to badly to believe.

We are all numb, sitting here in the echo of a voice we all thought we would never again have to fear. I am in the center of the hole, surrounded by the silent friends who suddenly don’t know the words to speak to each other or to me because our safety has been shattered. John, George and Grace are all cocooned as I am in this brutal numbness. And Bailey…

Bailey has his arms folded around me. One hand is tangled in the hair on my neck and the other is at my back, holding me tight against him as if he meant to somehow draw me physically into his heart and there protect me. I wish he could. I want him to.

I feel his murmured voice against my temple, whispering heartbroken apologies without words, just as his eyes did the last time Jack re-entered our lives. As the numbness begins to fade, I wish that I could crawl up into those eyes, wrap myself in that voice, and hide away in the safety of him forever. But I can’t. No matter what I want.

What do I do now? Do I throw away our beautiful new home and retreat back into the cloister of our fortress, casting away hope with it? Do I go back to being afraid every second, afraid to breathe, to feel, afraid to live, to love, afraid to do anything that Jack might take away from me? And how do I tell Chloe and Angel that their lives are once again in danger? That we all are, because I made a mistake?

I don’t want to do any of those things.

I wanted to believe so badly that I glued and framed the puzzle still incomplete. I believed because he wanted me to and led me to. He guided the game and I danced it, allowing myself to be illusioned. I wanted to believe because I wanted to see an end. He wanted me to because he wanted to see me relax and open his way for a new beginning.

Oh, God, how do I walk out of this room ever again? But how do I stay, when two of the most important people in my life are still outside and vulnerable?

I never wanted this.

I wanted to believe he was gone.

I just want it to end.

I want…

End Note: This is only relevant to the story in the most peripheral sense, but I thought readers might appreciate it anyway. Several years ago, I had the extraordinary luck to bump into Dennis Christopher on the set of Carnivale–I was working as an extra, he was visiting a friend on the set. He confirmed something the Profiler fan community had always suspected: that originally Donald Lucas *was* supposed to be the “real” Jack, but the fan furor over the role being recast (even though DC had never been credited) was what caused the producers to ask Christopher to come back. Now, as a general rule I don’t believe TV shows should make changes based on what the fans want: let’s face it, we fans are fickle and what we want isn’t always what’s best for the story, even on the rare occasion when we can even agree on what we want. But once in a while, listening to the fans is the right choice, and this was one of those times. And getting a chance to hear “Jack” himself express his gratitude for what the fans did was the icing on the cake.
